At TAM 8, July 8-11, 2010, Bad Astronomer Phil Plait gave a thoughtful talk called "Don't Be A Dick."

There was a lot of positive reaction to the talk, but also some criticism.

Saw this one first-hand and loved it. TAM is a blast if you ever get a chance to attend. Glad to see that the audio quality turned out well. The TAM London DVDs were hard to hear.

    Keep the videos coming JREF!

Is there a smaller version? 814mb is a LOT. (Some of us have capped internet connections, you know).

    October 8-11, 2010? I believe that's in the future.

At any rate, I'm with Richard Dawkins on this. When you engage in a debate you don't attempt to convince your opponent. That's virtually impossible. The object of a debate is to persuade the audience, and when pursuing that end there's nothing wrong with ridiculing a ridiculous position.

But with that strategy you're only going to convince an audience that's already mostly on your side.

You may see the opponent's position as "ridiculous", but there's a reason they came to that position, and it's likely that their peer group helped them get there by reinforcing all the constituent positions.

Thank you, Phil Plait, for saying something that has been in great need of saying for a long time.

Diplomacy and geniality are highly underrated in many circles, but they're essential if we are going to move away from the sort of toxic, "cannibal culture" that seems to have taken off as the norm in many areas of spirited disagreement, not just in advocating for science and the application of reason.

I'm watching this after viewing as many minutes as I could stand of a Dawkins "debate" with a particularly one-track defender of "teaching the controversy" and wondering why Dawkins couldn't have applied tactics similar to thost that Plait mentions at the end of this speech, in discussing an interaction with a Young Earth creationist.

The creationist defender in the Dawkins exchange was Wendy Wright, so it dovetails in a sense with Plait's comment about saving Tinkerbelle, I suppose. Part 1 can be found at:

It's a long, 7 part video, and I must admit that I grew tired of the pointlessness of the discussion within the first three parts, so perhaps Dawkins eventually managed to do more than stab at Jell-o as the conversation progressed.

I couldn't spare the added 40 minutes of my life it would have taken to find that out. The first 30 were just too painful to listen to, and besides, I needed sleep.

Awesome! When it comes to debate over religion, philosophy, and holes in science, it would seems patience and careful reason with evidence gets you farther than expletives.
