1. The Insane Console History Video 2.0
Last year, Elder-Geek released the definitive video slideshow of consoles, computers, and dedicated game machines. This year, our video editor, Eliot Hagen, updates his original list with a few more entries. Please forgive the quality of some of the photographs. Also, the systems are ordered by release date by year and then sub-ordered alphabetically or chronologically depending on what information was available.

As for the music...well...prepare for a long walk down memory lane. Kudos to you if you can identify the games the tracks come from.

Thanks to old-computers.com for many of the images, and the thousands of fans who had uploaded photos of these pieces of gaming history.

EDIT: You can see an ordered list of the music in the video here:

Wow! When I realised I was still watching 1977, all I could think was no wonder the industry imploded.
  • Elak Swindell 1 year ago
Totally agree. It seemed like there was a console for every day for every month in 1977.

Hence the crash. Every electronics manufacturer wanted to cash in on the new market.

Saw my Atari 800, Atari ST, NES, and the list goes on! :D -- The 80s looked like the smart phone wars of today with new machines every month.

Great choices of songs! Wow, watching this it blows my mind that it took so long for designers/developers to come up with a general use control scheme aka joystick / gamepad... So many devices that only had a few features. Nintendo has been bold with continuing a lot of that innovation rather than sticking with one solution -- much more than others anyway. What's next?!

Super Mario Bros. tune came to early in the soundtrack. I like that "Secret of Monkey Island" theme was put in there at one point.

Love all the music. Especially the Donkey Kong Country at around 12:00 and the FFVI right after.

That's great! I think 18:33 might actually be Bioshock as well and if 21:28 truly is from Shadow of the Colossus we only got 10:19 to uncover. ;)

I love the music. It's a little out of order, but every song fits surprisingly well.
And the video itself brings tears to my eyes. :)

01:21 is Gyromite, not Balloon Fight, and 11:25 is Ghosts n' Goblins

I think the last one is from Shadow of the Colossus.

You deserve a medal! Now I can finally go to bed... ;)

I've actually played Gradius, though not nearly as much as its clone Life Force.

Incredible list :) Great work, thank you!

Some machines that I didn't see, or maybe wasn't paying enough attention:
    - Atari 400, 600 XL and 65XE. The 1450XLD was in it, no?
    - Commodore SX64 (that huge, weird portable one)
    - oh and those Retro-8-Bit-Videogames-inside-a-Joystick thingies that came out a couple years ago -- I don't remember their names.

The double Amiga 500 and Amiga A 500 is probably a mistake; I think they are the same machine.
    But please correct me.

Also, I've never heard anyone call the Spectrum QL "Quantum Leap", even though that is what it stands for :)

That was a really long list. I've never seen most of the machines before 1982… and it's amazing how old and outdated some of these things look even from just 5 years ago. Not to mention those hideous glued-on-brushed-metal-plate wooden cabinet designs from the 70s. It is very good study material for product designers!

Also, I find it very interesting to see what companies innovated when, and how some companies didn't seem to notice the industry had changed and still offered their conceptually totally obsolete products.

It saddens me also to see the demise of Atari :(

I've missed the MGT Sam Coupé, from 1991 or 1992 (I think it was '92), which was partially compatible with the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, but also had some interesting features, although it was outdated from the very day it came out.

Ah, there should have been a Commodore SX-64, Apple //c, Apple IIgs, and maybe even an Apple /// in there. Otherwise, Nice. Totally dig the music selecton.
