I think this video accurately conveys the confusion I feel when I am in these situations.

I was raised Catholic. And let me just tell you, if you have that card in your pocket, the devil can't enter into your body. Also, you can use it to space out during long sermons at church.

Does, "these situations" = "21st century life experience"?
  • dalas verdugo staff 3 years ago
Depends on your location. You can avoid a lot of this stuff most of the time.

dalas, I wish we had a video of the time we ran through the mall screaming as loud as we could. Was that 2003?
  • dalas verdugo staff 3 years ago
Yeah, I think it was. To tell the story:

One day Jake and I were on the RIT campus, which is near a mall. We decided it would be fun to run through the mall screaming, so we entered through one door and sort of ran/skipped through the mall to another exit, yelling as loud as we could.

The best part was when we rounded a corner and came face to face with a ton of people who had heard us coming their way and so were kind of anticipating us.

Then we exited the mall, got in our car and left.

    Highly recommended!
  • dalas verdugo staff 3 years ago
Oh, also, I wish we had a video of that time we were filming in the mall parking lot and that security guard started harassing us, so we started following his security-mobile around the mall parking lot in that huge truck you had.

Then it kind of turned into a game of hide and seek.

You guys are such children. I wish I was there.

It would be cool to go through the mall yelling, "My credit card was declined!!! Whoo hooo!!! Now I can't buy this crap! Whoo hooo!!! Go home you hamsters!!!"

Well. The economy as we know it might collapse, but maybe a healthier one would emerge?

If they're charging 40 or 50 bucks, they should at least pay the Chinese dudes more than they do. They have to live in crazy dorms!

Also, maybe the most depressing aspect for me is looking at all of this stuff that is just going to end up in a landfill.

I'm not saying I'm innocent. It just gets me down. I try to do my part. We can all try harder.
  • staceyv 3 years ago
yeah, I get pretty bummed when I see commercials for disposable cleaners and all the one time use stuff People are always so excited about how you can "throw the dirt away". Throwing stuff away does not mean it disappears, it just goes into a landfill. so wasteful.

Plastic. Everything is made of plastic. None of it will last very long. Even the krispy kremes. They don't last long enough. You pop'em in your mouth and they melt. mmmmmmmm. And wassup with the kreme part? Where is it? That's pretty confusing to me.
  • dalas verdugo staff 3 years ago
It's near the Best Buy where all of the TVs were. On 82nd Ave, headed south. All of this footage is from the same day, I just put it all together.

Oh sorry I meant when you eat a KK donut there is no creme in it. I always expect some kind of filling from the main donut, the plain ones. Yet I'll go for one once in a while. Thanks for letting me know where they are.

me too, but I was always too tall and weighed too much to use one effectively. It would just kind of strain and slowly lumber forward

i especially like the shot you took when you were in the elevator. at first i didnt know thats what it was, and i was SUPER impressed with the effort that must have gone into taking that shot. but then i realized.

Don't get me wrong: There are a lot of things I like about the US. But this video really makes me feel glad to live in Europe.
Although there are a growing number of shopping malls here, too, it is a lot easier to avoid them and shop in an actual city (city center, mostly), with real houses that people live, laugh, cry, love, and die in. Malls are so sterile. No wonder they get you down, dalas.
The saddest part about all this is: IMO it seems most mall shoppers don't even notice what an un-natural, depressing environment they are in.
  • Tallulah 3 years ago
The construction of shopping malls (the indoor, climate-controlled variety) is on the decline. The new trend (in Alabama, at least) is to convert "dead" malls that were once enclosed to an "outdoor format", thus exposing shoppers to the elements and giving them the illusion of shopping in a real city center. Despite being outdoors, these so-called "lifestyle centers" are still pretty sterile -- they even pipe in Muzak through outdoor speakers!
  • jendreams 3 years ago
Oh, Tallulah, they just built one of those by where I live. It scares the shit out of me! It's like entering a universe where emotions don't exist.

Of course, the same is true of enclosed malls, but at least they don't give the illusion that you're actually out in the world.
  • Tallulah 3 years ago
The saddest thing to me is seeing old(er) men, who, back in the day, probably used to get together for breakfast at some locally-owned downtown diner, now resigned to meeting at the Starbucks in the local "lifestyle center." There's something strange about seeing a guy in overalls and a baseball cap (remember, I live in Alabama) ordering a Cinnamon Dolce Latte and a croissant.
  • Johann plus 3 years ago
That really is a strange and sad picture. Why don't you try to make a video clip about it?
  • dalas verdugo staff 3 years ago
Yeah, most of Portland proper isn't like this, but once you get outside the city a little bit, this stuff is perched there waiting for you.

    all malls are the same.
    they are sad.
  •
  • ed 3 years ago
I guess I don't get it. Why are malls horrible and sad? I don't really care to spend a lot of time at them, but in suburban areas that lack a "downtown" shopping district they seem better then a bunch of strip malls.
  • dalas verdugo staff 3 years ago
Well, there are more than two options.

This was 3 or 4 weeks ago when we rented a car to try and find a used N64 controller.
