omg.... there's no other way to explain it. The treasure hunter was killed. He would have gloated online with the money if it was the other way around.

Wow awesome job on the video. Great writing on your part, truly awesome story.

But what I do want to say is it seams more like an elaborate suicide to me. This guy is sad and alone (Al one/1) and makes this game. But no one seams to be seeing it so he solves the first clue and posts a video about it. Still no one is even trying, he goes out to the field makes two sets of foot prints and what seams to be a struggle and kills him self.

That's just my thoughts on it, I may have missed something but what's the likelihood someone would wait for the seeker to show up at the field and meet them there.
  • Adam Butcher 4 months ago
Interesting. A friend suggested this to me when he first saw it...it certainly makes for a *third* possible interpretation.
  • BTarver 4 months ago
And what are the first two possible interpretations?
  • elliot 4 months ago
haha awesome work Adam! anyway if it were a theorized suicide it would be pretty obvious to the police only because no tool of suicide/weapon was reported near the body
  • Jeff Black 4 months ago
Al1 (alone) == Fortress (of Solitude)?
  •
  • Vigilante HD plus 4 months ago
    Well done indeed!
  •
  • Marein Könings 4 months ago
Another thing that supports the suicide explanation are the shovels - there is one in Al1's pictures with the money, and Fortress has one on the train - and they look very similar.

On the other hand, why, then, were there two sets of footprints and signs of struggle? And what about the message of the yellow letters?

I'd like to offer another possible explanation: Fortress arrived at the money simultaneously with a second adventurer who had also seen Al1's original website but never stumbled upon Fortress' videos (not many did, after all), and they fought over the prize. It would fit with the 'Pardoner's Tale' theme, I think. In this scenario the body could be either Fortress' or the other adventurer's.

Finally, what about the narrator? Did he really simply stumble upon this all, or is there something he hasn't told us?
  • Marein Könings 4 months ago
In fact the 'other adventurer' might actually have seen Fortress' videos, and was trying to get there before him. This would explain why they were at the site around the same time.
  •
  • John Savvopoulos 4 months ago
A brilliant intriguing story has no need to be explained. The beauty in creating it is the doubt it leaves. The different explanation each one of us will think.

It was a well put together story and I like they you went to all the work to make the youtube fortress account and to make the Al1 site. You had me fooled/curious for a bit but then I looked into the sites, dates, and website source codes to find that you, adam, made the Al1 site

but awesome all in all. the video is worth all the work you put into it.

Well that was one overwhelmingly convincing story....but you've made yet another mistake. How should fortress have uploaded the video of his trainride? I doubt that he got his videoediting tools with him nor did he have an internet connection on his journey. And if he would've been the murderer I doubt he would've uploaded the video of his journey to the scene of murder, because the mere possibility of the police finding a video of him traveling to the place of an unsolved murder and therefore making him the main suspect would've been enough for any normal-thinking human being for not doing it.
But the style the creativity and the effort required for making such an amazing video is astonishing :)
The pure awesomeness makes up for the Story not being true and for fooling us all :P
    I love it :)
  •
  • BTarver 4 months ago
CLEARLY Fortress' quest is fictional. However, "Sometimes, we just don't realize what we're looking for." Should we be looking for something else?

That is, (especially in light of the very yellow Adam Butcher's comment about a *third* interpretation) is "Internet Story" itself a treasure hunt?
  •
  • Eduardo Magueta 4 months ago
    amazing.
one more amazing proof that a great film can be made with practically any means available if the story is strong enough!
this wins the internet! (for today at least)
  •
  • Wade Wilson 4 months ago
I think the farmer is Al1, he owns the land, making it easy for him to wait for the treasure hunters to show up.

But someone did make a good point of, if Fortress filmed this all on a camera, then how did he upload the footage of the train ride?

The only explanation is that he survived.

In any case, I'm a fan of your work guy!

Just gotta admit, this video is awesome. Thumbs up!

Btw, for these guys who believe in this story, its fake, sad but true.
4:11, Fortress put up and video 16 may 2005 and 4 days later he made a new video, so he made that one may 20.
6:22 he says he got stuck for 2 weeks, which means he got unstuck and could continue june 3.
6:40 he figured out what the hint was and decided to go to wales, were the treasure is.
7:10 It says He went to Wales 2 days after that, which means he got there 5 june.
8:04 in the top of the screen it says the newsflash was realesed 4 june, which means
the news got out before he got killed.
Earlier in the video Fortress said he was 1 step ahead everyone..According to this theory,
the BBC was 1 step ahead him.

    Just sayin'

So how did the reporters get a "before-death" picture of a dead, unidentified man? ;)

Really awesome and intriguing story, it would have been even cooler if it was real but it was obvious from the beginning that it was too good to be true, amazing video nevertheless and I find it nice that you came up with a story (though it has it's flaws) which can leave people speculating about it to this extent, not many can do that :)

  • Hantacica 4 months ago
I absolutely loved your video, have been sharing it with everyone whose opinion I value. I do not care about it being fake or not, it really does not matter - what matters is the elegance of the structure: a modern interpretation of The Pardoner's Tale, with the original tale embedded in it - simply delicious! Also, the transition from funny through creepy to horrifying, very nicely done indeed!
This story has been told by many, and so far my favorite was The King's Ankus by Kipling from the Jungle Book, but your version, with the added dimension of the media you used has just put Internet Story to the top of my list. Thank you very much for the experience, keep them coming!
And to all the trolls out there: stop proving that it is a fake, stop analysing, stop dissecting - that one moment when you got a shiver down your spine, that was the gift you have received by the creator of this video. Once you have smashed your gift to pieces, all you are left with is garbage.

The pace , the format and the sense of mystery wraps up the "beware of the internet" message carefully in a way that doesn't offend anyone while still teaching them a lesson about the dangers lurking online .
