Initial port of the Magic Lantern firmware to the Canon 550D / T2i camera. This version only adds on-screen audio meters, but shows that it is possible to add the film making features that users need.

Swweeeeeeeeet!!! I run CHDK on my A640 and shot a video with some scripts I wrote. Do you thing you will be able to build interval timing into Magic Lantern? ;)

I really appreciate your work on this and can't wait to test it on my T2i.

Excellent! I'm surprised if they didn't add similar encryption and limitations to this as they did to the 7D. What were some of the technical hurdles?

Please give us some tools to make custom firmwares! (like firmware decrypt/encrypt tool) there is a big community growing around the 550D/T2i!

I've posted the updated details on the wiki and committed the latest source to the hg tree. If you clone the 550d branch you should be able to build your own AUTOEXEC.BIN files for development.

Will there be a way to disable the AGC?!?
    That'd be perfect.
  • Pavel Shmelov 1 year ago
Yes that would be perfect. I've heard talk of manuel audio control which means that AGC would be eliminated.

DUDE, this epic. You are my new hero.
Is there a way to hack the record limit?
    But you work is great.

Is the original firmware still there? Like you can take pictures and stuff still?

A while back some russian developer 'unlocked' features of a Rebel to match the 20D I believe. Do you think it's possible to 'unlock' features of this Rebel? Example, the T2i has a limitation of 1/4000ths shutter speed. A 7D has I believe 1/8000ths.
  •
  • Hofnaar 1 year ago
    1/8000 would be great.
  •
  • Luis Martinez 1 year ago
I am so geekly excited about this!

Now if only Canon or the folks at Magic Lantern could just disable the auto LCD shut off when an external monitor is plugged into the HDMI port. Then this camera would be perfect.

YESSS! This made my day! Now, we just need the AGC disabled and we're getting somewhere.

Do you have a donation page to help contribute? It'd be the least I could do if this works.

I'm following the code-progress on bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/overview even though I don't understand half of it. Never done that before, but this is exciting! The ability to turn AGC off and this is camera becomes something very close to 'pro'.

mmmh ? Possible to have 50Mbs Video bitrate with different codec on EOS like GH1 ?
  • mmm yeah. i wanna ask that from you too Trammell.
  • Dan Pham 1 year ago
Well the T2i already has a pretty high bitrate. I think it's around 40Mbps

Kill the AGC, kill it! The noise, aaaaah the noise! ;)

Crazy that Canon doesn't fix this in a giffy
  • Andrew Price plus 1 year ago
Agreed! Why do we have to risk damaging our camera with Alpha firmware, just to turn off a feature that Canon implemented in the first place!? Its proposterous!

Cool, have an idea donno if it is possible but wonder if 60p video could be filmed as slomo already instead of having to use software afterwards to slow it down.

is it possible to enable ISOs between native ISOs through firmware? Like the 60D and 7D. For example ISO 640, etc...
  •
  • everything fine with a 8Gb Kingston SDHC Class 4 card, but there's a problem with 32Gb Silicon Power Class 10 SDHC card - the camera doesn't startup, turning it on/off have no effect. Only removing the batteries helped.

has anyone ever heard of anyone whose t2i or 550d was damaged by the magic lantern firmware hack?
  •
  • Nicholas Lindner 1 year ago
    Hey all,
Has anyone attempted to use the intervalometer function for any long-term time lapse projects? I'm interested in powering my T2i with a ACK-E8 AC adapter for a month-long time-lapse, but am vary of any potential damage to the camera. Page 9 of the firmware user guide warns not to leave the camera on, but the wording is a bit ambiguous in meaning.

I had magic lantern on my 550d, it worked really well with some cool new features (mainly disabling the agc) however on play back there was no sound and every time i switched off the camera and back on i had to re-update the firmware. I'd wait till they have a better version out - hope this helps people.
