Still needs some tweaking.. especially the quick fade at the top of the smoke is a big no no. If I can't find any way to correct it with particles I'll try to get rid of it with nodes.
I used the instructions found on the BlenderArt magazine's issue 16. blenderart.org/issues/
edit: I got rid of the quick fade by animating the fade to a tiled texture. Here's and example: vimeo.com/1496788
