Dance Your PhD Video: "Experimental Investigation of the Deformation Near a Notch Tip in Metallic Single Crystals", Wendy C. Crone, 1998, University of Minnesota.
The video depicts deformation patterns emanating from a notch tip as it is deformed in bending. The single crystal copper alloy samples are "breaking up" in a ductile manner as load is applied. The lines that appear near the notch tip are persistent slip bands. As loading increases the bands get longer and more numerous, but are restricted to certain zones. The zones that form depend on the crystallographic orientation of the particular sample.
