Further experiments in slit-scan style video, sometimes called time slicing. I like to think that this is what you might see if you looked at our world from a spot in the fourth dimension. (^_^)

These clips start as normal video clips that I've captured along the Oregon Coast. Then I run 'em through a script that I wrote in Processing.

The script works by taking a vertical sliver of pixels from the source video, advancing the video one frame, grabbing another sliver of pixels, and so on through the entire source clip.

These slivers are then stacked horizontally to create one frame of the final clip. The animation effect is created by advancing the location of the vertical slice and repeating the stacking process.

So each frame of the final clip represents the change over time of a stationary spot. As the video advances, the spot we are seeing moves through space. Normally as a video advances we move through time, so we've sort of swapped the two.

    Thanks for all the comments!

Had a lot of fun cooking this one up as a back burner project over the last couple of years. Was great to realize I could finish it up, and I was so psyched to get BoingBoinged. (^_^)

hubs: The script is available, I shared it when I made my first slit-scan vid called Waveslice. You can grab it here: shiny-life.com/dl/VideoSlice_Release1.zip

Hmmmm, trippy. I'm not sure I get what exactly is going on though. Does it only work with water?

No, you could run any clip through the procedure, I just found that waves produced these interesting results. Examples of other subjects being slit-scanned' on Vimeo - might be some other descriptions of the effect that make more sense, too. :) vimeo.com/tag:slit-scan

Can you say how you do this in Processing? I've done this same thing in the past through an arduous process of converting a video to bitmaps, then using a Perl script to create new bitmaps from one slit of each original. I'd love to know of a better way!

Don this is an awesome video! I have tried a few scripts and yours has worked the best! However I am trying to make a video slit scan rather than just an image...can you help me?
  • Don Whitaker plus 1 year ago
Elena, the Processing script that I uploaded has (limited) options for rendering individual frames or compiling into a quicktime mov as it renders each frame. I generally prefer to render and save a frame at a time then compile them into a video later. easier to start and stop the rendering that way.

If you are getting only a single frame when rendering a movie, then you may be have the start/end frames set improperly, or some other glitch.

I've uploaded a new version of my Slitscan Processing script. It has a few more comments and is set up to render individual frames rather than compiling the movie on the fly.

    Here's a link with a sample vid. (280MB)

Hi Don, beautiful imagery! Is this available under Creative Commons?
  • Don Whitaker plus 1 year ago
Thanks. Yes, it's Creative Commons - Attribute. Guess I forgot to set that flag when uploading. You should find a download link over on the right side of this page.
