Journey through Canyons.

I went on the trip to Canyons in Arizona and Utah,
visited Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon
and this film is the coverage of my trip.

Music by Nicholas Gunn:
"Entering Twin Falls" from the album "Music of the Grand Canyon"
itunes.apple.com/us/album/music-of-the-grand-canyon/id60496368

Very special thanks to Nicholas Gunn for the music.

Set of "Making Of" photos can be found here:

I tried to stay away from the people and cars, so had to
hike up, down and in the river for many of those shots,
but could not avoid planes, but hey, those are not planes,
but shooting stars.

I also spent several nights down at Bryce Canyon at full moon making timelapses
and I must tell that hiking at full moon in Bryce Canyon
is one of the most amazing hiking experiences,
even better than going into Narrows of Virgin River ;)

Thank you for watching,

My initial plan (i even have it in my notes) was to shoot timelapse of Rays being born in those Slot Canyons. I did not realize that Upper Antelope Canyon is like Disneyland. I later got suggestion to go to Wave, they only give out 20 permits a day to visit that canyon

  • You did it again....You're a killer Metron.

  • Can you tell us more about fps? 1080p? 720p? RAW or HDR for the timelapses? thanks very much :)
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
    Thanks for the comments.
All timelapses and video are at 23.98fps. 1080p.
I shoot everything JPG as it is not forgiving ;) , yet many times I feel RAW would have saved some of my timelapse shots and helped fixing them in post.
I tried HDR and it is there in film in two shots, should have played more to make it less noticeable.

Thanks! Makes me miss home! I grew up in Kanab, Utah and spent lots of time in these places. And I'm thrilled to see Nicholas Gunn's Music used. The whole album is beautiful and very true the places the songs are named after. Beautiful work!

    Thanks!
I loved "Flight over North Rim" by Nicholas Gunn the moment I heard it on Pandora radio - that is how I discovered his work, then I wanted to film for that song for a long time since it really makes you feel flying, i tried it for this film, but then some slow shots had to be cut. Next time!

Last photo which I included on this page shows how I did it with the help of magic arm on the slider. I tried it from different spots and in different times of the day, it is a short hike, but I hiked to it three times on two different days. Evening light is not good on that spot, and early morning did not have clouds.

  • Awsome! Your pix tell a lot on how you managed to get some shots. However, how did you manage to get those camera mouvements on some of your time lapse? (What were you camera setting by the way?)
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
Thank you, please check the comments on one of the "Making Of" photos: it explains the panning, I also tell that settings vary a lot and I write them down for every timelapse including all the filters used, time of the day/night and phase of the moon. Geo location also makes a diff. I can be more specific about specific shots.

At 1:27 do you have any idea what the bright object is at the upper left corner? I'm an amateur astronomer and still can't figure it out. I'm thinking either lens distortion or elongation (due to long shutter speed) is making it shaped weird and confusing me. There isn't an obvious "landmark" within the sky for me to make an educated guess.
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
I am asking the same question myself and few other people asked it. I really did not notice anything, but I was semi-asleep ;). Thanks for the comment and question
.. And I did a lot of night timelapses at the same shutter speed of twenty seconds, but this is the only one which has it. Yet you must be right, bright star and long shutter speed are likely reason - I will pay more attention to it in the future, but it must be some famous star then??
  • Patrick Louie 1 year ago
Hm...if it was in the southeast during summer it might have been the planet Jupiter.

EDIT: Confirmed using Stellarium (free planetarium software) that it is indeed Jupiter. I had to compare star patterns. Looks like the coma from the lens distorted it in a way that made it elongated like that. It's somewhat noticeable on the stars around it too but just not as much because they are dimmer.
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
Oh. That is bright and famous :). Thanks. There are also various constellations in multiple shots, which are quite noticeable as very dense clusters.

Holy moses! Metron - this is some crazy beauty here - you are a gifted brother. This is I feel the most mind blowing video I have seen. Period. Baraka - esque. Thank you so much. Please do more of this and share as you have - so generous.

How were you able to join your Manfrotto Magic Arm to your Glidetrack as shown in DPP_00046
    on your Flickr page?
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
    Thank you!!
I used Manfrotto Super Clamp on each end of the Magic Arm. It is very essential add-on for magic arm. I have four of clamps now, so with the help of two magic arms and four super clamps I can set up glidetrack over anything now.

Great work! I am leaving for this same area in 2 weeks. I cannot wait to re-visit the area. I really want to do one or 2 night-time time-lapse shoots. I have 5D II. I was just wondering what your settings were for your shot at 1:20 and the following shot at 1:32. Also, how do you deal with the changing light during sunset time-lapses?
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
    Thank you!
For those two of night shots:
    1.8F, 20sec, 1600iso, 5 days old moon
For sunsets I shoot in Manual, so do nothing about changing light, but I do use GradND filter 3stops hard edge.

Unbelievably beautiful film!!! I don't understand how you are able to see stars in the daytime. What exposure setting is necessary for that time lapse?
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
Thank You!! It is during the night near the full moon (those shots with blue sky and stars)
  • Stephen Lewis plus 1 year ago
But what about 2:50 - 3:06? Was that at night? Looks like daytime and you can see stars clearly. How do you achieve that? Thanks!
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
Those two shots are from the same night and it is two days before the full moon. It was really bright. It was an amazing hike down into Bryce Canyon in the middle of the night.

Amazing. Awesome stuff. If you dont mind me asking, what intervolometer are you using, and how long were you exposing each frame of your timelapse in some of those night shots? Specifically at 2:58, where it almost goes from light to dark. So talented man, bravo.
  • Metron plus 1 year ago
Thank you! All night shots are 20sec exposures and it is TC80N3 intervalometer.
