Rob’s PhD focussed on a little-known and long-forgotten optical instrument called a synopter, which is a simple optical system that presents the same image to each eye. Remarkably, this can add substantial amounts of pictorial relief to any two-dimensional surface (be it an artwork, picture, photo or TV).
Rob uses psychophysics to systematically identify the exact factors which contribute to this apparent added depth information.
The School of Psychology can educate in the underlying principles of depth perception.
