On the way back from Stainsby Folk Festival in Derbyshire yesterday morning we stopped off at the motorway services for some breakfast. Just as we finished eating a Sikh wedding party showed up. They were the groom's side and were on their way to Newcastle for the wedding. They had just stopped off here for refreshments and a dance. Grabbed the Flip and shot this.

People celebrating life. Now that is something you just don't see every day.

    Hi Steve,

It was amazing. Just the thing when you're coming home from a festival. Felt like the festival had escaped it's confines and spilled over into the "real world".

What a party! So cool to see that out in public. So lucky.

I know! Was great to see many of the other diners and staff rush outside with or without their cameras to enjoy the spectacle.

The groom is wearing a traditional sehra.

For those of you who do not know about this, a sehra is made of strings of flowers that hides the face of the groom from the bride till they first view each other in a mirror. That is at times one of the small ceremonies during the wedding.

Thanks for that, Tasawwuf. Am I right in thinking it has something to do with a verse in the Bhagavad Vida about the groom coming "clouded in night".?

Not sure about that, because South Asian Muslims do that too. It seems more like a cultural thing. There are of course many ceremonies that are culturally common to Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims in South Asia and may be originally based on one religion or another. For that matter they may have nothing to do with any religion.

For sure! I'm seeing a Sikh friend in the morning and will ask him for more details.

Really enjoyed watching some of your Sufi music clips. In the description of one of them you talk about how wonderful the lyrics are, any chance of a translation?

I've read many books of Sufi stories and books about Sufism over the years but my knowledge of the music doesn't go much beyond Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

    Hi CTD3,

Thought this might be up your street. Thanks for the "like".

Keep sending me the "shares", I always watch them but don't always have time to comment, will make more of an effort now I'm back on Vimeo more regularly.

Nice to hear from you jchap. I find Japanese culture particularly fascinating, are you still there? I know I should just click a button and see your clips to find out (and I will) but it's nice to be able to ask, too.

Ive recently witnessed an incredibly elaborate Sikh wedding a few doors away from where I live. Our street has never looked so colourful. Thanks for sharing this.

It was about 10am and more of a wake-up than the coffee. A feast for the eyes and ears.
