A very quick&easy setup. First I rendered a bunch of random images scrolling from bottom to top and rendered the same composition in b/w (I used After FX). Then in Cinema 4D, I mapped it on a simple sphere and used the b/w video as a displacement map. Bang!

    Does mapping to sphere create the thin slices of video?
    Wandering if starting with a 3d video would give even more impact.

    Yes, the whole process is just as simple as I described.. just make sure you use contrast images or just heat it up in after fx..
    Another tweak would be to use semi-transparent for a strip and dispalcement map + use it as a alpha channel on material... that could create a nice see through slices...

    Good stuff!

    You can do this kind of thing in realtime with GLSL. The only problem is generating normals for lighting.
