This multi-award winning short was selected by ONEDOTZERO and screened as a part of "terrain 08" at festivals around the world. It´s a great honor to screen work alongside the likes of Onesize and Tronic. Visual Music is my graduation film at the design department of the Hochschule Anhalt (Bauhaus). For this production a selfdesigned 35mm adapter was used. The CG elements were animated in Cinema 4D.

A music video about a man trapped in a dream. His world, consisting of "plattenbauten" (buildings made with precast concrete slabs) begins to fall apart.

reminds me of several videos i've seen (say, from the RES magazine DVDs from the early 00's), BUT - your video has a bit more humanity in it than the others. nicely done. i agree w. the "good editing" comment too.

    Hi.
I've seen this short in Warsaw some time ago and I really loved it! You are right about this fascination. neubau-like modular architecture inspires me very much.
I like Your subtle 3D touch on it.

@Katarzyna: you were at the euroshorts filmfestival? that´s so cool, what a small world!
visual music won "best animation" there.

This is great. Is it shot with 16MM ?
  • 12FRAMES™ 2 years ago
it was shot on MiniDV. the film-like look was achieved with a selfdesigned 35 mm adapter. details: 12frames.de/motion.html
under "VISUAL MUSIC" just click on "VIEW 35MM ADAPTER"

Great video, how did you achieve the edge fogging?
  • 12FRAMES™ 2 years ago
i am not quite sure i understand your question. what do you mean exactly?
  • Harry Joaquin plus 2 years ago
The light red fog look which appears along the edge of film, generally from film exposure during loading or unloading. Did you composite this over the footage? Its very realistic...
  • 12FRAMES™ 2 years ago
ok, you are talking about the light leaks. all done during compositing with footage of actual overexposed film.

Someone just pasted this on my facebook, it has a nice blend of animation and live action. Interesting tech use with the adaptor. You must have a background in engineering or optics to create that. Well Done will check out some of your other work.
  • 12FRAMES™ 2 years ago
thanks. nope, no background in engineering. just a designer with an interest in optics-> the internet is full of useful information.
the development of the adapter took almost 6 months (including several mock ups to test various techniques).

that´s really nice. Perfect mix of old techniques with new ones in a visual and narrative way. Old camera effect is very oniric. Grande!

    Hey,

What's the BW image at 02:00 ? Does it have a name? It's also existing in Black Swan. I think it has an bizarre and pessimist impact on subconscious. If you inform, I'll be glad.

    Keep it up! :)
