Another experiment with the glitched camera. This time I placed a layer of plastic wrap over my screen and shot old videos from Vimeo in full screen mode while drawing over them with sharpie markers on the protected screen. I then downloaded the archived films and re edited them. The music here is a remix of Miles Davis and Bill Evans' Blue In Green.

I like the wrap effect a lot and the music is cool. Did you apply a flanger on the mix?

I tried the wrap once but directly on the camera itself. How did you shoot the old videos if the camera is glitched? I'm confused - is the cam glitched or not?

I shot them off the lcd screen with vimeo playing full screen... so all the colors and shapes are from old videos plus marker colors that get glitch/pixelated by the broken camera. The things that look like clean video are downloaded quicktimes that I cut into the new glitch abstractions. The glitch camera will export directly into imovie all this fucked up imagery (it won't record to tape, however). Does that make sense? I'm running the browser, with i movie hidden behind the full screen video capturing the distortions. Layers on layers.
    Music:
I used some samples of piano and horn and played the original track through a can filter and added some synth bits among other things.

" i movie hidden behind the full screen video capturing the distortions"? you can capture screen with imovie? now I'm confused again
  • Alex Itin plus 1 year ago
no, the camera is firewired into imovie. I movie is just recording what the glitched camera sees but can't record to tape. Though I did use some screen capture software for some old gifs, but that's another story.

lol bene, that makes more sense. i like recording like that with the camera hooked up you can do many things. and I think with this set up you can still get use of the camera of course you may never leave your house again if that is the only way you can record.

yet it would make an interesting project, no? One day Alex Itin's camera could no longer capture to tape but it was able to capture hooked up to iMovie via firewire so here are the recaptures of all videos captured prior to the camera brake down. You can start a new user here on Vimeo to upload such videos- call it Alex Itin's Recapts (I don't know- I'm horrible with titles)

Of course if you did this project and never left the house for an entire year there may be a chance you would become a celebrity of some sort - a virtual one- at the very least
