the day before I shot this video, i was SUP surfing with a couple friends and 2 sharks circled us for about 15 minutes. the next day, i decided to go back out at around the same time and take my GO PRO HD HERO camera (gopro.com) mounted on a 10 ft pole and do some exploring.
Sure enough within 5 minutes a 9 ft shark came out of no where and circled twice and slapped his tail on my board before disappearing. then a minute later a 7 ft young juvenile Great White swam circles around me for 12 minutes. It was an unreal experience that I will cherish forever. chuckpattersonsports.com

SUP is safer in that you can at least SEE what's below you in a wider radius than laying down on a board.. I'm terrified of what I might be missing.. but maybe I don't want to see that stuff!

1:34 that juvie whipped his tail so fast it looked like he did 0-25kts in a blink!! brrrrrr!

Amazing footage man! You should do the flat lens mod to your go pro and you can get crystal clear underwater shots same as above water. Itz cuz the bubble on the housing distorts the image, cant believe they didnt fix it before they made it, but they claim, its because the camera is not made for underwater... well, its why it sells... soo......

    can you buy this mod?

Some of us that surf this area have spotted these juveniles at Trails, Dog Patch, Old Man's and as far north as Four Doors, in the surf line over the last year, someone even named one "Fluffy". One explanation is the State buried a whale down past Trail 6 a few years ago and the mother shark bore and raised her two young in the area. That's why they are crusing the Sano area. I like the idea about breaking the story before the next south swell....Shark Tip...Sharks attack shoulder hoppers first !!!!!

I'm going to share this with a friend, I was pretty sure I saw shark fin as we were slowly sailing along but he seemed to think it wasn't. I'd say the fin was just like the one on your shark.

Also, geez, you were on a SUP board? I'd be a little nervous just on an ocean kayak and at least there I can pretend I can stay completely out of the water!

  • Kimmie Spencer 1 year ago
That's wicked awesome that you found them in that spot again.. or they found you, I should say.
More proof that if sharks really liked eating humans they would have eaten you... just be careful out there man. Don't want to risk it too many times without protection. They might get annoyed & take a bite just to show you who is king of the ocean ;)
    Kudos on the footage!!

Beautiful sharks. I see a tag by the dorsal fin. It is worth circulating your shots to some GW Shark researchers as they may have dorsal fin recognition data and will be able to say where it was originally tagged and how far it may have travelled.

Hey Chuck - I was out there last saturday evening and the same two sharks were patrolling down at Old Mans... one 6' and one 9'... all of a sudden my little 6'11" SUp was feeling really unstable ha ha. Christine named the small one "Junior" and was almost chasing after it on her SUP.

As a surfer, ocean swimmer and diver in San Diego I can only say that we are not the APEX in the food chain while in the water! If you want to get up close to "friendly" Leopard Sharks you can snorkel in 5-8 feet of water in front of the Marine Room restaurant just south of Kellogg Park at La Jolla Shores........the Guitar fish are cool as well. Enjoy and respect the ocean; it's the only one we have!

    Very cool!

The white shark research team at the Monterey Bay Aquarium thinks it's likely the streamer on the shark's left side is the algae-covered leader left behind after one of our electronic data tags pops free and begins transmitting its data back to the lab via satellite. No way to know for sure, unless we can get the ID number off the leader.
