I had gone to see Big Black Delta play in Los Angeles and was armed that night with my steadfast little camera. I didn't realize the affair I was going to have with the song 'dreary moon' until I heard them perform it. I knew that was going to be the song I wanted to put the footage to; all I needed was a story…and I found it.
This is my adaptation of the Kittinger mission on the Excelsior III:
Colonel Joseph Kittinger leaped from a gondola in outer space and landed back on Earth some four and half minutes later after falling at speeds of 618mph. Though it was his prior leap where we begin our story. He had failed this attempt not managing to climb the distance needed in the gondola to clear Earth's atmosphere leaving him melancholy in the cold of mid-December watching the snow rise around him, waiting in anticipation to attempt the leap again the following summer.
So on through the portal of thought and wonderment he went until that day arrived. It was in August of 1960 when he had made his third and final attempt in success (as you see right around the 3rd minute mark).
From here I made it go a bit further though…I had the Colonel fall beneath the ocean he landed in and end up witnessing strange women breathing through air tubes connected to unseen machinery. Then the ending visualization is just a recap on our whole story.
Some of the live footage shots I synched with the song and others I felt had to be detached, because clearly, to me, the song is, at times, naturally calling for something opposite than exact timing on parts. It's a fluid song and has room for things like that, in my opinion. The only drag was that the drummer wasn't lit properly; so she doesn't get as much love in this, sorry.
Colonel Kittinger had said something about the famous leap that made me feel a connection to the lyrics, "When you have a fervor to accomplish something, or seek out someone, sometimes you'll do anything humanly unorthodox to make it come true."
