After Rome had crushed the Jewish revolt of 70 AD, a small group of Jewish zealots still held out atop the mountain fortress of Masada in the rugged desert. Nearly all of them committed suicide, rather than be captured by the Romans. The meaning of Masada, and the facts, are still disputed.
