On Friday 16 May it was announced that a cull of kangaroos at the Belconnen Naval Transmission Site would proceed.
The plan was to subdue up to 400 eastern grey kangaroos by darting them, then once subdued, euthanise them by lethal injection. Previous plans in favour of tranlocating the animals was rejected on the basis of cost. The cull commenced on Monday 19 May 2008.
Earlier on Wednesday 21 May a group of indigenous protesters entered the site and were subsequently arrested by police. A group of protesters have set up a permanent vigil outside the main gate and Canberra Votes approached them for their opinions regarding the issue.
