Many years ago, I recall, that I have met a young man who was severely injured by a mine explosion in his military service (here, in Israel), lost sight in both eyes, lost forearm of one hand and some fingers of the other. He asked me about my occupation and since I had my Minolta Maxxum camera with me (a film camera with auto-focus ability) I told him about my love for photography. The guy showed interest in my hobby and I suggested to take a picture of him with his guide and further on gave him the camera to take a picture of me and his guide. Although it was a difficult mission for a man in his condition he listened to the AF sound and clicked the shutter. It gave him quite a satisfaction and I could see a glimpse of desire to do it again. Unfortunately I forgot to take his telephone and the slide he captured remained at my possession as a souvenir.
Anyway, it brought me to write a letter to Minolta manufacturers and describe to them my experience with the blind guy and recommended them to develop a camera model which will enable blind people to take pictures easily and freely, since they don't need TO SEE in order to make it happen. THEY SEE in their own way (as I have learnt from my meeting with that amazing guy).
I didn't get any respond but since then the digital photography was invented and automatic cameras became common and affordable to all.
Even though you decided to go the hard way, Pete, with film photography and manual lab work and I salute you for your achievement. Good luck pal.
A beautiful, touching story told with exquisite detail and heartfelt passion. Wonderful work Christian, a very inspiring document of a truly inspiring artist. Best to you and Mr. Eckert.
