259. You're Fired!

I visited my brother in Providence a few weeks ago, so that's where all this footage is from. Except Reggie's footage, which is the song he did right before we shot Out Of Control.

The name is Standby because Reggie says that when he's going to call you soon, or when there's a cell phone problem. And also because of the Tammy Wynette song.

I made some "wrong" decisions editing this. It's easy to get stuck in your own habits; little rules you create for yourself that do not necessary have a reason, other than being a tradition. I tried to just let go a little bit more than usual. An inspiration was the Sand Cats record Some Kind of Mantra. sandcats.net

The part where I eat a bite of waffle illustrates an aspect of my personality I wish I could let go of; this serious guy who can't stop thinking about something irrelevant that he thinks is important at the moment.

btw, I uploaded a high-quality version of this. Download it if you want the full experience.

I like the way the flashes are edited.

I'm not sure the part with you and the waffle conveys the same meaning to the viewer that it has for you. It just looks like you eating a waffle.

I'm absolutely blown away...by this video quality. It's so unbelievably crisp even in flash conversion.

I'm also glad that you've been uploading more and more vidblogs.

Really cool flashes. I like the backwards parts too. It may just have been the background noise, but it seems a tiny bit like a sketch from Jam at points.

awesome, it's an honor to be compared to Jam.

I love the part where the guy starts drumming on the floor (1:45 in the video). I do the same thing and it drives people around me nuts. I can't help it.

the cuts from song to song don't allow you to slow down and feel laid-back with whats going on. it constantly makes you uneasy and kind of forces you to pay attention and catch the switches.

I think I analyze this stuff too much but I liked it a lot.
  • Jakob Lodwick 2 years ago
I like the analysis. I tend not to analyze my own stuff too hard, so it's certainly welcome.

its not criticism or anything like that, just admiration!

i love 4:00-around 4:20 when the clips flashed with Reggie's beats! Awesome work with that.

I wonder...does Eric have a future in speaker holding? I think he does. hahaha

one of the best episodes, the editing is really good, the flashes of reggies music are nicely done, those rewarding scenes and serveral details -- hummm I like it :)

I'm not sure why, but I feel like the last 45 seconds or so of this were directed by David Lynch

Scarily good feeling in this clip. I love that ambient sound in the background that is constant throughout.

That girl kind of looks like Joanna Newsom.

I had the same feelings watching the video as I did in Providence, I felt like I was there again! Nice job!

I really like all the little stuff you leave in, like when you zoom into the ceiling to adjust the white balance. I'm also a fan of the audio editing and the flash transitions!

The ending to this was amazing, when it turns black. Felt like the ending of a good movie.

I almost cried during the ending the first time I saw it.

I was not sad, just so happy at how good a video can be.

Beautiful video, it's full of interesting things both visually and audio wise, great all the same. Mind if I ask what the song is called at the very start that is played in reverse? thanks for the video.
