The viewfinder is indeed our Cyclops, which is way, way overdue. That said, we've completed the shooting for the tutorial on Cyclops and all the cool rigs that you can build around it. Should be done this week. If all goes well, it will be shipping in it's base configuration, for well under $400, before month's end. Cyclops is as simple as a viewfinder, or as elaborate as a fully counter-balanced DSLR rig, with follow focus and mattebox options out front.

Unikt, you can use two tripods, a c-stand, a 75/100mm ball directly to sticks etc. to support the rig. The vast majority of folks using Atlas, use what's on hand to support the rig. Two chairs, two french doors half opened (slider on top of doors), table tops, floors, counter-tops etc. are common supports. For studio use, we typically put a 100mm ball at both ends and drop these directly onto sticks for a very solid base. This way, your tripod head can go on the slider via its 100mm bowl.

Thanks all for your kind comments :-)

    Cheers,
    Dennis Wood

    Dennis,

How much clearance is left underneath the rails with the bowl head attached?
  •
  • my friend Vinny has your Atlas 30 LTS (and everything else you guys have) and i must say that thing is BUTTER!!! i plan on investing in one shortly

what lens/lenses were used for the shots by the lake and of the girl etc? the depth of field was just right as I hate the amount of DOF that most DSLR filmmakers capture. It's like it's some kind of pornography that they have to have shots with lots of depth of field!
  •
  • Definitely one of my favorite pieces of equipment to bring on set with me.. My Atlas has been getting around more then a hooker on the track ahaha..

Zac, yes I've been known to rock the goat(ee) every now and then :-)

Adam, David and Peter use a variety of lenses (wide angle zoom, 50mm prime, 70-200 etc), but more importantly, graduated/ND filters. This allows them to dial in the correct f/stop and shutter combination to get the depth and motion blur they're looking for. Both have won multiple awards for cinematography (both have strong film backgrounds) and as you can see...they really know their stuff :-)

Philip, say hi to our pal Vinny (Minton I'm assuming..). We're looking forward to the House episode (airing this fall) that he helped shoot!

Mark, depending on the all-terrain leg setting, you'd have from about 1 to 4 inches under our 100mm ball "nut". We've sorted things out so you should never touch anyone's expensive table top. The all-terrain legs do offer more clearance than the old "claw" type leg, and quite frankly, we're going to phase the old leg style out as the all-terrain setup is far more popular (and usefull too).

    Cheers,
    Dennis

    hi dennis,

just wondering about the new cyclops rigs that are coming out. are they going to have the top handle option like the core. i think it's such a smart design but i want to wait to get it to see what the cyclops rigs you're talking about have to offer. are they as compact as the core? one thing holding me back from core is the weight. one of the reasons we use the 5d system is because it is so compact. can you give any hints if these new rigs will be lighter? also love the top handle design. i wanted to know if you are going to offer the matte box with a top handle option. buying the separate bits was more than $300 extra. be nice if there was just the top handle + matte box option. i know a lot of people would buy that.

Hi Dennis- Getting ready to order my Atlas 30. Will the 58" rail version fit in a 60"x8"x7.5" carrying case? If not, what are the demensions needed? And do you plan to stock an optional carrying case (soft or hard) in the future?
  •
  • Shot a wedding yesterday and the photographer was so impressed with the Atlas he said he said he called your office today wanting to buy one.. His name is Vijay..
  •
  • Cinevate pro 1 year ago
HGF, that case should fit just fine, the atlas body is about 5 inches wide, and the 58" rails are shorter than your case. We do have a soft case (with back-pack straps) that would take Atlas 30 or 200 in the works...it's in the prototyping stage right now.

Imp, thanks for the referral :-)

Dianne, Cyclops uses fibre-reinforced composite so is very strong, and very light. Adding the Medusa cage option ends up providing a top handle, and would be the lightest (but very strong) rig we're capable of. Add in the shoulder rig and counter-balance and you've got a full DSLR rig basically with every option that we could conceive of. We're anticipating the rig will be quite popular :-)

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

Thanks for the demo - Soooo, stocking product in Henry's Toronto & Montreal - maybe the delivery truck could stop on the way for a break in, let's say, Ottawa... and drop off a few units at Henry's there too!

What a cool product with great engineering! We'll definitely have to buy it soon!

Jeff, ask your Henry's sales person! We've just started shipping product to Henry's main store in Toronto and will be doing a few training sessions there in the next few weeks. Perhaps we should ask about an Ottawa session:-) Alexander, thank you for your kind words. We've worked (and continue to improve) on the Atlas 30 hardware. You'll like Atlas 10 which will be released later this month.

Diane, Cyclops videos are loaded and will be public next week...so you'll see what we've been up to.

Hi Dennis - I recently purchased the Atlas 30 Slider. Love the unit and I would recommend it to anyone. Couple concerns I would like to address: 1) The slider requires a 100mm ball and I have a Sachtler FSB8 which is a 75mm ball so I bought the Sachtler 100mm-75mm adapter, which does not fit into the Atlas 30 bowl. Will the Bowl Interface: Adapter 100mm Tripod that you sell work with my tripod head? 2) To raise the slider up, I've been using small light stands with the holes provided on either end. This is not the best solution because the unit has a tendency to wobble, but I don't have two extra tripods lying around or a table always on hand. Plus the small stands can be packed into the same bag as my tripod. What solution can you offer to prevent this wobbling? Thanks, Matt

I've had an Atlas Slider for a little more than a year now and it's one of my favorite pieces of gear; wish I could use it everyday. Cinevate is a top-notch company to deal with. Outstanding customer service and they are constantly adapting their products in response to market needs (that's not just marketing hype in the video!). I can honestly say that their products are worth the investment, even as a serious amateur.
