24. Chatham Light - Letus Extreme Film - HDTV
1 year ago
Check out my webpage: tomguilmette.com

Color version available: vimeo.com/1429692

I drove to Chatham, Massachusetts to work the Cape Cod League All-Star Game and decided to bring the EX1 and Letus. I headed up a few hours early to beat the infamous Cape Cod traffic and as a result, I had some time to shoot a short film at the Chatham Lighthouse beach.

This was close to the area where the movie 'Jaws' was shot.

I used my Sony EX1 and the Letus Extreme to get the film look. I brought my lenses and only used the Nikon 50mm f1.4, the Nikon 24mm f2.8 with a polarizer, and the long Nikon 300mm f3.5 telephoto.

I shot this video in 720p 30p in overcrank (60 FPS) mode. I slowed it down even more using Twixtor as a plugin for Final Cut Pro. This film was shot in color, but I removed all the chroma in post and crushed the blacks.

TRT: 3min, 21 sec

I loved the way you used the sound with the footage. This was very timeless in a way. Then again, the architecture in Cape Cod hasn't changed over the last several decades, so that might be it... :)

This is amazing, you are really an artist, mixing these beautiful images with great music and keeping the original sound with slow motion. I really like it.

Great video! My favorite part was at 2:24. The way the light shines off the board is so cool!

Mine is 2:56 ;) I also love how Vimeo lets you click on a timecode and it goes to that point in the film!

looks so good with that tempo tom, good work as always.

one thing id like to ask tho, you always mention "crushing the blacks" what do you mean by this or should I say how do you go about doing this :/ :)

crushing the blacks is a tv term used when you make the gray areas of the picture, darker. this gives the video a more "filmy" look with higher contrast values. when used with over-saturation, the colors in the video pop off the screen. i will repost this video, "chatham light" in color very soon.

you do this with the "three way color corrector" filter in final cut pro.

i'd send this to someone with the chatham chamber of commerce, visitors bureau, etc. and tell them you just updated whatever promotional video they have, and to have them forward you the payment. ; )

    i wish they would!

    Tom,
Amazing! I too don't understand the meaning of crushing the blacks. Please Explain? Also interested in twixtor? What is it, is it expensive, and how do ya use it with FCP. I'm using the same basic setup as you only with canon fixed focal length lenses on EX1 and Letus Extream.
    Thanks for sharing your talent

i used twixtor (non pro version) to make the slo-motion in my video much more smooth. twixtor intelligently slows down, speeds up or changes the frame rate of your image sequences. it is a plugin for fcp and all you do is drag it onto a clip and adjust the speed using key frames.

twixtor is processor intensive and takes some time to render out. the result is silky smooth slo-motion (especially with water) when shooting at 60 frames per second. keep in mind that fast moving objects do not look good when you slow them down using twixtor. if the frames are not there, the computer has trouble "faking it".

the program costs $329.99 for just the plugin.

Keep it B/W that REALLY works with this project. Quick question - you shot at 720p at 30fps overcranked. Isn't Vimeo set up for 24fps? What are the advantages / disadvantages in 30fps vs 24fps. Thanks Rick
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
my website is set up for 30 fps so that is my target.

as for vimeo, my guess is that they go with 24 fps because it uses less bandwidth and plays out better to most computers using flash video.

i shot a mt biking video in 24p and posted it to vimeo and i did not notice much difference.

24p with shutter can give you a neat effect. see the movie "saving private ryan".

  • I like your understatement '... and ONLY used the Nikon 50mm f1.4, the Nikon 24mm f2.8, and the long Nikon 300mm f3.5 telephoto' :-)

It's so interesting to see your work (which is usually oversaturated) being desaturated. It's still amazing!

Keep up the good work, and get me my CSS vid!!

(I'm moving back to the city on August 30th)
