Agree with Joshua, with no avatar at my side: fell like pretensions of being someway modern and with an ambient, putting girls with empty (maybe thinking of that is "cool") looks in big clothes and some ugly makeup to make a quite numb afterworld statement. Just see a lot of emptyness, just enjoyed location. Dont see use of critic for critic, but dont understand so much enthusiasm. Am Im too fixed on acting and sense and subtle atmospheric shots?
  • Eldorado Entertainment plus 11 months ago
Well, Leon, sometimes it is not about what we like or don't, but just what other people wanted or needed to express: I don not understand this video completely, but I appreciate the effort and the courage of making such a strange and disturbing work. Since the song it supports in called The Drug, maybe that was the idea.
    Kind regards,
    David

Beautiful cinematography (though slightly repetitive shot selection). Grade helps to create a nice dark mood.

I must say though (and perhaps I'm just not 'getting' it), it did seem about as meaningful as your average hiphop video.

I don't think it's enough to shoot 35mm, and slap on a nice grade (sprinkle in weirdly yet 'cute' teenage girls, some deformed/madeup actors, and a semi-automatic), to make a great video. I agree with Schuchard et al. above that it didn't really change anything for me.

Does *anyone* have any guesses as to a meaning or hook?

I can tell lots of thought went into this piece, but I find it sad and unfortunate that story took a backseat to ambiguity (for ambiguity's sake).

What was really sad for me was when the price of steel went up in the late '70s causing all the small junkyards to be cleaned up and in the process eliminating my favorite photographic subject matter.

I will have to visit Detroit. It looks like fun to me.

Maybe a nice mood, but I didn't get the point. Especially the development of a dramaturgy fails at the end. A cool location and some weired scenes are not enough to call a music video brilliant.

Very cool. Post-apocalyptic setting with girls in theme-park spray paint shirts? Anamorphic photography?

    Loves it.

Also - music videos don't need to have a "meaning".
  •
  • Donato Totaro 1 year ago
Very nice job. Even though the post-apocalyptic has been done to death, there's a reason why, and that's because it works. Anytime in history feels like it could be the last. Meaning? Well, great looking people peeping into their 'ugly' mirror reflections so at to say, "look at what we've done, what we've become...."

  • Medvedi Petrovichi 1 year ago
You must know Royksopp very well in order to understand the sound and the video.
The song is called "the drug", the melody builds up in our head as a drug does, makes us feel dizzy, uncertain, free, the video looks like someone's dream, by the end that girl wakes up and watches the moon, it was her dream..
There are a lot of clues which explain this.
  • Leon 1 year ago
Ok, tried to see it from this point of view. Would have prefered just seeing atmospehric shots (has a little of that), but without actresses (people pretendig to act) or symbols (gun, skulls) when there is no sense behind. If you have nothing to say, be consecuent with that, it can be great, but this has the pretention of meanings. Would have liked also some color correction..
  • francoe 1 year ago
    I Agree.
    Badly pretentious shit.
I can't imagine a showy teenage script when I hear Senior.
  • Matthew Sibley 11 months ago
Leon, this has been graded un graded raw footage looks extremely different to this. Also we shouldn't forget that not everything has to have a meaning we live in an age of postmodernism not everything has to end with the narrative wrapped up. Lets not forget Rowland Barthes idea of Death of the Author Birth of the Reader. I agree with Medvedi's point.

This is beautifully crafted with great cinematography. The lighting was great - I especially liked the shot of the girl beside the wall in the rain.
Also, there doesn't need to be a narrative or a point to the video. And I think the girls are great - because they are expressionless I think it makes it all the more haunting.
My only negative point would be on the predictive cutting - it's nice to edit shots off-beat sometimes.
