Demonstrators are seen outside the Burmese embassy on East 77th Street, New York, New York on August 8, 2010 to honor the past Burmese demonstration of August 8, 1988. The original 1988 demonstration began with students in Rangoon in protest of an oppressive government but quickly escalated across the country to all demographics. It was at this time that Aung San Suu Kyi was established as a national icon. The demonstrations ended a little over a month later with the violent takeover from a military coup, resulting in the death and imprisonment of thousands. Burma is still today ruled by a military junta.
