3. Timelapse Montage
A montage of my timelapse shots through the summer of 2010.

The dolly moves were done using two custom track and dolly systems that I engineered, utilizing off the shelf components with a bit of custom fabrication. My primary system consists of a set of Mumford rotary tables with a Time Machine for the motion control programming. The secondary system consisted of a lower tech servo city DC motor.

Music is by Hans Zimmer, "Dream is Collapsing" from the Inception soundtrack.

Beautiful piece, Mike. There were some gorgeous shots in there. I especially liked the shots with the light cloud cover moving by, in between the rocks and the Milky Way. And the Inception soundtrack sure does add a lot of drama to it all. Well done.

    Awesome work!!
    I really enjoyed it.
Forgive my rudeness, could you try the video with "So Long, Longsome" of "Explosion in the sky"
I found it unexpectedly matching with this music.......
  • After many times shooting the moon and last night, trying to shoot the eclipse... have to say you have a good knack for setting up the moon and shadows in your shots.

Wow Epic ! May I ask what are your lenses of choice ?
  • Mike Flores plus 1 year ago
    Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II
    Canon 14mm f2.8 II
    Canon 24mm f1.4 II
  • Dominic plus 1 year ago
How do you like the 14mm compared to the 16-35mm ? Heard the 16-35mm was really soft in the corners and had lots of distortion at 16mm.

Music or Dolly? The Music is listed in the description, the track is either my ladder dolly, or my custom aluminum track.

Amazing footage man, I like the clip of the sky scrapers and the camera rotating around in a circle. Good stuff.
  •
  • Nice dolly movements, well placed fore and mid ground subjects. I really like how you lit some of the foregrounds. Loved the dramatic play with dark and light changes. Paced with intense music and this isn't just a reel of nice set ups but an example of good planning in composition.
Huge fan of time lapses and this one made my jaw drop.

hi I worked on still timelapse shots before. which was pretty easy. but I have never seen something like this before , I d like to learn how to make that dolly effect.

    is that a special rig?
  • Alex McCarthy 1 year ago
I would like to know this too. How did you get the dolly effect
  •

Great timelaps, I like the transitions to the music and what looks like faster speeds as the music gains in tempo and intensity

Terrific work! I was surprised at the shot at 2:10 where you got the milky way and the moon. I have been having trouble capturing the milky way with that kind of texture and definition. What are the best conditions / exposure for photographing the Milky Way? Thanks!
  • Mike Flores plus 1 year ago
If memory serves, that night there was only a crescent moon out (maybe 15% illuminated). That type of shot is only possible in a dark sky location, like in the middle of the Baja peninsula.

Pretty much the best thing I've seen in weeks. Do you have any advice about dolly movements/are you using mechanics to move it or are you doing it manually?
  • Mike Flores plus 1 year ago
It's done mechanically. You can learn more about building a motion control timelapse rig at the timescapes.org forums.

    Thanks a lot Mike! : )
