The mother Moorhen has a small piece of grass, or weed in her beak, she approaches the juvenile, but instead of handing over the offering she turns her back, and apparently looks at nothing in particular, keeping an eye out for the location of her offspring periodically.

When the juvenile goes out of sight she makes haste to find it, and then surrenders the present.

Is this some part of the weaning ritual?

Or just maybe I'm reading it wrong.

This is a job for super 4Moorhens2, and of course any passer-by who may just have a suggestion to throw in the pot.

I really must get out and dust off my Grandma's old fiddle to put a musical score to my video's. She got it from Ebay off a chap named Nero, it's a little scorched, but can still play a good tune.

Anyone got a mouth organ or Jews harp, or should that be a jaws harp?

That's a mighty fine shot to add to the collection. The colors seems so vibrant and it seems to me it's because of the light. I'm confused though- I thought the pond dried up- is this recent or from past shots you are now unveiling?

I wish you would get out the old fiddle- would love to hear that. Nero. Now there's a name. Almost like mine Niro though I can assure you no relations. Contrary to what many think Nero did not fiddle while Rome burned. That is because there wouldn't of been a fiddle in his time but rather some sort of a lute. Anyhoo- this is what I've read... he was crazy though and definitely did something while Rome burned. Maybe nothing. :-)

BTW This is probably my fav shot next to the two carps romantic encounter. ;-)

Thanks again for stopping by, and your comments.

As far as history goes, I've lived through most of it, and at school I was more interested in the history teacher's anatomy to take much notice of the lesson content, she had all the right shapes and in the right places, no, no, no I'm getting too excited, I'll have to close this thread.

There was no colour processing at all with this section of the video, my only intervention was the degrading due to my cropping in the editor, apart from that, this piece is as it came from the camera.

I think, now that you've prompted me to think about this scene, it is possibly because the wildlife in the background is in the shade of the overhang from the trees, whereas the Moorhen is in the open. This was purely unplanned, and could quite possibly be an idea for a future shoot. Thanks for bringing this up Maria.

Sorry, I have only part replied to your questions, I was half asleep when I wrote the above.

In fact, I fell asleep whilst replying to Sir Fourmoor's comment.

This short was part of the Pond 1 video, but was not shown in its entirety in the finished version.

This is the main (upper pond), the one that dried is really a flood preventative acting as an overflow for this one.

So the score is currently 2 all in the fav stakes then!

I'll keep on posting pretty little wildfowl and fish, and you can just keep hitting me with that effective polythene bag and things that go ooooh in the trolley.

Keen, I fully agree with MariaNYC's opinion regarding the quality of the video (sorry Maria I don't know much about Nero, the fiddle and the lute.)

OK, "super 4Moorhens2" firstly needs to know how many moorhen juveniles are there in the family. If there is more than one, then the adult could have been saving that tasty morsel for another of its young, indicating this with its body language - the first juvenile possibly having already been fed and exiting to the right; then a different (unnoticed by your good self whilst you were concentrating on the adult) hungry juvenile entered, also from the right of the frame and subsequently claimed its parent's gift. If there is only one young moorhen in the family or if you are certain that it was the same juvenile then I would say that such behavior is simply part of the charm of those adorable little birds.

Hope this theory makes some sort of sense, anyway all the best, looking forward to seeing your next wildlife video, 4Moorhens2.

Thanks for getting back on this one 4Moorhens2.

I remember now, you commented on the scene in Pond 1 about the shot of the parent where a juvenile passes by, there were in fact two juveniles who passed on the original footage. So, yes there were certainly at least two juveniles present when the footage was taken. Now, I can chew on the theory that it was selective feeding and communication, that communication was certainly effective, and for me, makes interesting viewing.

I can't loose that feeling of symbolism about the scene though.

I have to go now, maybe we can communicate further on this one.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

My apologies for having to make a dash earlier, but I actually dropped off whilst writing. I don't even remember posting the above reply.

For me, the questions are now.

If this was selective feeding, why did the parent have to get so close before realising that she had the wrong juvenile, when she identified from quite a distance the right one.

Whichever way round, I have discovered a new love that is the Moorhen, thanks to you my dear friend.

    OTHER MATTERS.

I hope to be framing and uploading something completely different, as the Python used to say.

The problem is that the subject matter has a habit of disgracing itself, so the editing will need to be very carefully executed to ensure that absolutely nothing in shot will offend the Vimeo platform.

So, it's passports at the ready for a four=hour excursion to... (No chance, wait and see.)

All that I will say is, this is going to be, (I can't say this word without crying) expensive, there I go, I've upset myself again.

    Better close eh!

No problem, I had a little snooze myself this afternoon.

The parent possibly gave a thought to feeding chick #1, but then, for some reason, decided "no, I am going to save this for chick #2 - he [or she] is next in line." Then perhaps, at some point, the parent heard chick #2's unique squeaky little call and the job was done.

I'm off out again this evening - still need to get some shots of them geese...

    OTHER MATTERS....have a good trip????
