WONG:
The first-ever Chinese International Violin Competition came to a close yesterday. The winner walked away with the top prize of $10,000. Let's take a closer look.

STORY:
Violinists of Chinese descent from around the world came to New York to compete in NTDTV's Global Violin Competition. The aim of NTD's nine-part Global Competition is to revive traditional Chinese culture by promoting authentic cultural expression.

But the series isn't only concerned with Chinese culture, there are also Western cultural forms that Chinese have come to excel in, like as piano and violin playing and oil painting.

Musicians commented on the fact that the competition was held to a very high standard, and that Chinese should cherish this opportunity to promote traditional arts, whether Eastern or Western.

[Wang Yi-yao, Violinist]:
"This is a very rare opportunity and a very rare program. Chinese should cherish it."

Musician Dr. Alexander A. Fondak, said that an international competition of this caliber is very rare and will inevitably set a new standard of excellence in the world.

[Dr. Alexander A. Fondak, Musician]:
"I believe, no matter who wins, they are all the very best Chinese violinists. This breaks new ground."

The judging panel chairman, Lin Jiayi, said that this year's NTDTV's competition differs from other competitions in that it emphasizes the inner content of the musician.

[Lin Jiayi, Judging Panel Chairman]:
"The key to music is to move people. If our mind is very calm, very pure, the music we play will be very pure and peaceful. The audience will be able to feel it. This is what we want to achieve."

The NTDTV Violin Competition is scheduled to be an annual event. NTDTV, New York City, New York.
