Great work Jesse and Adam! This was one of my favorite interviews from you so far. I thought the music in the background was a bit distracting in the beginning—a little quieter next time?

Excellent work by all. The tip I learned about coat buttons is, from top to bottom, "Sometimes, Always, Never." Sometimes you can button the top one. Always button the middle one. Never button the bottom.

You know, a lot has been said about the fantastic advice given by the show, but I don't think enough credit is given to Adam and the boys for making such a professional show. Nothing about this series screams "web series", from the fantastic cinematography, to the pacing of the editing, and the music selection, and even the typography (I mean, really, no detail is left out) this is by far one of the slickest, most professional shows out there.

Fantastic advice guys! But really, REALLY fantastic show. You continue to blow me away.

Aw, thanks, Ad. We do it for you.

This is all because Adam is a genius and a craftsman, combined.

    Truer words were never spoken.

And Jesse is pretty great too ;)
  • I think the way the photos pop up screams "web series." Everything else, -- yeah.

Great music selection in this one. Loving the Mulatu Astatke.
I wish this were a daily series.

Adam's advice is always sound and always makes me crack up.

  • I almost bought the Joe pants a couple months ago, just because of the name.

Good work. I took a job about 1 year ago at a place that's **totally** slack, dress code-wise. I might up my dressin' game up a little bit once the thermometer moves south of 90 degrees. Thanks for the motivation.

The Nerd Boyfriend segment was awesome, a great addition to the show of a great blog. I hope it becomes a new staple of future episodes.
  • lonelysandwich 1 year ago
I will tell Roxana this, Matt, and you will have made her day.

Love the show, exquisitely well made, typography is awesome, the sets are awesome, the fashion is awesome, all in all an incredible show.

Too bad it takes you so long to put out an episode :( But I guess it's worth the wait so even if it takes you so long, keep it up!

Great work! What is the song at 5:00? It rings a bell, but I can't put my finger on it ...
  • lonelysandwich 1 year ago
Thanks for asking, James. That's "Skating" by Vince Guaraldi from the album "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Isn't it the most wonderful?
  • James 1 year ago
It is wonderful. I love the series. The Nerd boyfriend segment in general was great.

The best part is the dog's little kick.

Making love to one of Jesse's gaudier neckties, little fella?

I'm actually kind of disappointed, the Four in Hand? A knot that produces lopsided, loose ties. The Double Windsor, while a bit more difficult to tie, consistently gives tighter, tidier knot.
  • Michael Chadwick 1 year ago
Oh man, caught red handed spelling my own name wrong. I didn't mean for that comment to sound snippy, the Four just seemed to be a weird choice. Also, holy crap lonelysandwich made fun of me, my day has been made.
  • lonelysandwich 1 year ago
I wasn't making fun, Michael! (On the Internet, everything sounds snippy.) But now you've fixed it, and I look like an asshole.

As for the windsor, I'm a fan of it, too. You should ask Jesse his opinions on the matter. He has strong ones.
  • Put This On plus 1 year ago
Neither tidiness nor tightness is a desirable quality in a tie knot.
  • Michael Chadwick 1 year ago
Finally, my years of plotting and scheming have finally paid off, the culmination of my efforts leading to making the sandwich look like an ass on the internet. Mwahaha, haha. I'm nefariousness incarnate.

I think we may have very different ideas about the function and form of a tie, Jesse. It's been ingrained in me that a well tied tie is much the same as a firm handshake, and nearly as important.

Great episode gentlemen, I eagerly await the next.
  • Put This On plus 1 year ago
I agree that a well-tied tie is as important as a firm handshake. I just disagree that well-tied is synonymous with "tidy" or "tight." Or, especially, symmetrical. (The lattermost of which you didn't say, but I hear a lot.)
  • Michael Chadwick 1 year ago
My ties do wind up being highly symmetrical, though it isn't something I particularly strive for. More likely the symmetry is a side effect of the knot itself, and the particulars that I do take note of in the tying.

I feel like I'm pestering you at this point, but I'm interested; what does constitute a well tied tie in the eyes of a Jesse Thorn?
  • Daniel Hayek staff 1 year ago
I'm siding with the full windsor, especially with a narrower tie. My rule of tumb, wide tie, four in hand. Narrow tie, full windsor.

Great show guys, I think this was my favorite so far, mainly because the items are much more approachable than custom made shoes and high end denim, they're all great though, amazing how much a grown man can learn about dressing oneself.

I agree with Kevin on the music volume, but all in all great. Thanks!

Guys, although the interview was ok to hear about "why" a guy dresses well... please teach people "how" to dress for work... I'm sick of seeing bad business casual everywhere...

Talk about appropriate shoes, talk about where your pants should hit, talk about getting measured for your shirts, talk about matching, talk about where to spend money and where not too... get it. Inform, teach, educate, whatever you want to call it... please make fun of me in the comment thread because I didnt praise you...
  • lonelysandwich 1 year ago
I wouldn't dream of it, Ryan. Thanks for watching, and I hope you'll visit the site for a ton of good information that goes into the details of dressing like a grownup.

Darn, I was in need of a laugh... I have zero issues dressing like a grown up... I was just hoping the video would be more on teaching instead of the talking about dress clothes... I'm sure you guys are already planning the next one...so maybe it'll be more on the informative side. Thanks.

It never occured to me I would have the need to watch a show like this. Never in my life I've been interested in dressing particularly well.

But I watched episode 3. Then episode 1. Then episode 2. And now I need to watch more.

It makes me very excited to know that there are people willing to do such clever and well produced shows like this for web distribution. The production values are so high, the typography (as it has been repeatedly complemented before me) is phenomenal, the soundtrack, everything fits so well. I can't believe I never heard of Adam before, but I'll make sure to follow whatever's next from him.

I'll be patientlessly waiting for the next one, I'm blown away. Congratulations.
  • Jesse Thorn plus 1 year ago
Thank you, Henrique, that's very kind of you. Adam's great at what he does. I'm in awe of his skill.

Fantastic episode, both in content and execution. It amazes me how approachable and current PTO feels; that's not always the case on the topic of style.

Cocoa's mid-sleep leg twitch is awesome too.

Dress in a way that makes you comfortable.
Get noticed for your passion and the quality of your work not how you dress.
That being said if you find a suite comfortable by all means go for it. I for one can't stand wearing jeans so am always in a pair of dress slacks.

The Four in Hand knot? Really? My favorite is the Pratt Knot. It's baller. The Four in Hand knot is just too sloppy looking. It's lopsided. It's loose. It's uneven. While I do sometimes like a non-symetriacl knot, a Pratt is just classy. A Full Windsor is badass, too. The Four is just so... 8th grade dance to me.
  • Daniel Hayek staff 1 year ago
    I agree.
  • Tony Moore 1 year ago
I scrolled down to type pretty much the exact same post. Of all the knots I know, I like the Four-In-Hand the least. It's the one almost everyone uses, and probably the only one they know, but as far as I'm concerned, it makes you look like you're not worth a damn at tying a tie. Pratt or Half-Windsor pretty much accomodates all the cloth types I've encountered and looks sharp.
  • Khürt Williams 11 months ago
Growing up in the British West Indies at a private school, the Full Windsor knot was the only knot taught and allowed. I agree with Mike, the Four-in-Hand looks sloppy.
