Florida Women Of The Waves event took place during the weekend of July 23rd, 2010. The event was sponsored by The Cocoa Beach Surf Museum cocoabeachsurfmuseum.org
During the event several activities took place including:
The viewing of the women's surf film "Dear and Yonder" at the Cocoa Beach Public Library. Saturday the gals spent the day surfing together at a local surf break. Saturday evening was the grand opening of The Florida Women Of The Waves Exhibit housed at The Cocoa Beach Surf Museum which is located at The Ron Jon's Sport Complex in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The exhibit covers the history of women's surfing in Florida. The exhibit was designed and developed by three female curators (Melody DeCarlo, Marie Hughes, and Sharon Wolfe-Cranston). They spent over 900 hours collecting and organizing information submitted by 125 Florida female surfers. The weekend wrapped up with another surfing social at a local surf break. It was a fantastic event, and there is already talk of planning an event for 2011 as well. Many old friends were reunited and many new friends were made during the Florida Women of The Waves event. As the volunteer videographer of the event, I tried to capture the essence of the event through informal interviews, and the surfing that took place during the event. The exhibit will remain open for the next several months for those wishing to view the exhibit in person. A big thank you to all of those involved in helping to make the Florida Women Of The Waves event a successful and very memorable event.
