    nice !! i think u forgot Tron 1982
  • lnrdshelby 1 year ago
it got left out in the cold since it didn't have digital characters, but the amount of vfx was definitely impressive at the time...
  • Todd brannon 7 months ago
"Bit" from Tron was one of the first fully CG characters, if not the the first. He even had dialog.
  •
  • Hussin Khan 1 year ago
Yerp Tron should be there somewhere

imagine jurassic park with stop-mo dinosaurs :)
question : what happened in the 70's ? was there no remarkable visual effects in films at this time?
  • lnrdshelby 1 year ago
sure there was some progress in the field of vfx, but nothing noteworthy concerning digital characters...

    really cool movie!!
But let me say, that you forget "ET".. and all that we have learned from the great Carlo Rambaldi, and his fantastis toys with Mechatronics :)
  • lnrdshelby 1 year ago
    very true.
i should've included tons of other people as well...
the brilliant stan winston, to name only one...
but since it was supposed to be only 20 mins long, i had to throw a lot of stuff overboard.

Anyone knows the title of the final soundtrack? I know it's from LOTR but I can't seem to find this version anywhere...Love the piano part in it...
  • lnrdshelby 1 year ago
it's an excerpt of "smiling" taken from the "man on fire" soundtrack.
  • Roel Goens 1 year ago
Thanks mate! It sure as hell looks a lot like The Shire from Lord of the rings... But I live it anyways! Thanks!

Very nice and interesting video. I still think Jurassic Park holds extreme quality and if someone told me it had been done today, I'd believe it. (not knowing about it's history of course :) )

  • Tabularas 11 months ago
Nice Video. But the Interresting part on how Davy Jones (and the other characters) were tracked would be a lot more interesting than just saying that he looked so rea. ;)
  • lnrdshelby 11 months ago
yup, sure would be interesting to see more of ALL these movies and how they were done, but with limited time available both for making this video and the final running time of the documentary itself, there are bound to be sacrifices...
the four movies that are IMHO the most important among the bunch received a special treatment, the rest got a bit of screen time and a nod. :)

thanks for this compilation!. As ILM had its golden era believe that Weta is having his time right now, i think weta has really innovated in the last features. Right now they are making Tin Tin, it supposed they would create cg characters into realistic environments, and forget Beowulf, i'm sure this movie goes to innovate again the characters animations. (sorry for my english)

Not being picky.. Buts its "JOHN" lasseter. not JOHN. And nice work on the video. Its amazing that VFX has grown to such scales
  • lnrdshelby 11 months ago
    [...]"JOHN" not JOHN.[...] ^hehehe
    ...those pesky spelling errors.
i've seen this thing so many times and just 3 weeks ago a comment alerted me to the fact that i accidently misspelled his name... thanks for your keen eye.
  • Philip Rakesh 11 months ago

Woah ... I have instantly aged seeing your compilation... I have seen all of those CG Characters when all those films where in theater premiere and I enjoyed absolutelly all of them, so it is why I made my job on the CG industry.

That beeing said I just missed one film in the compilation, Star Ship Troopers for two reasons:
    - The huge amount of CG Creatures in the original film was astounding.
    - Thippet Studios really deserves some credit in cg history.

Anyway, thanks for your effort and time in making the video... !!

    Salut!

    Missing TRON.
The video is very ilm oriented, disney also did some very interesting cg in the early days.
Then I'm missing BUF.fr (fightclub). Border moving cg characters there, why no mention of that?

A hi-res version would be terrific, the compression kind of defeats the purpose of the movie. Jurrasic Park dinos looked just as good as Avatar. :) Still, very watchable and felt shorter than its duration.

    Nice, informative, congrats.

But, alas, crudely saying, more have such technology and possibilities advanced, crappier films we got, with shallower characters, less logic action, more banal story. There are exceptions, no doubt ... But, the less you have, more creative you are, yes?

You should add Who Framed Roger Rabbit (not really CG but it was another way to insert a lead character animated in a live action movie), the lawnmower man, I Robot ?
