Animated short film, Royal College of Art, London, 2009

Dictaphone Parcel is an animation based on a sound recorded with a dictaphone travelling secretly inside a parcel. As the hidden recorder travels through the global mail system, from London to Helsinki, it captures the unexpected. We hear a mixture of abstract sounds, various types of transport and even discussions between the mail workers. The animation visualizes this journey by creating an imaginary documentary.

Dictaphone Parcel was awarded the Passion Pictures Prize in London, in February 2010.

Sorry, but this reminds me too much of a work of artist Janek Schaefer, that sent a recorder by mail to an exhibition, back in 1995 (!). His work was called 'Recorded delivery', by the way, and can be found on the dvd 'Short Stories'.

Beautiful line work dancing between abstraction and representation. I would have loved to see more of the imagery take off on it's own and depart from the reality of the sound track, rather than just illustrating what what happening outside the box. Still, it is beautiful, fluid animation. How did you make sure the recorder didn't break on the way and kept recording the whole time?

I like it. Maybe I'm taking it too literally [or don't understand dictaphones] but how did you get the audio to record for so many days in transit? Does it turn on and off according to a certain decibel level of sound?
