what program did you use to do the light effect?
  • Steve Nemeth plus 3 years ago
He probably used Adobe After Effects CS3.
  • steve 2 years ago
can you do that in adobe cs4?
  • Tio Dave 2 years ago
Ben McEwan does a great tutorial on light painting. He doesn't use the tracker though.

Where can I order one of those flashlights? Pretty awesome. I love the effect of how the riders could write their names. It was a very creative way to watch another snowboarding film. I too would love to hear how you created this light effect.

    Hey guys,

Thank you very much for the kind words. The effect was created in After Effects. We had the riders hold flashlights with them turned on so they would be easier to "see." Then we used a modified version of Andrew Kramer's tutorial (with plugin Trapcode Particular) to create the streak. That was pretty simple, but it became a huge challenge when the camera moved, which meant we had to somehow move the entire generated beam with the camera, while keeping the emitter point on the light.

Um, I am sorry if this post spoils the illusion for some people. But ya know, everyone's asking. :)
  • Austin Wendenburg 3 years ago
how did you get the light streaks to stay in place when you had camera movement? ive been up almost all night and ive been able to do everything but that and its killing me haha
  • Freaky Productions 3 years ago
he did a Motion Tracking in Adobe After Effects..
  • Sam Ellens 1 year ago
haha, the second I saw the traces I knew it was Kramer.

Mike, great video my friend. I loved the theme, music, everything about it. Very relaxed, and intense at the same time. I've worked on something similar with that tutorial from Andrew Kramer, but what I find amazing is how you guys spelled out words and stuff like that. His tutorial really didn't show that in depth. Way to be creative.

I feel like Andrew Kramer should get a free snowboard camp out of this one. He taught you guys what motion graphics is all about. Now it's your turn to school him on some shredding.

Anyway it's nice to see "Particular" finally plugging into the snowboard scene after so many years. It was nice that you brought the" Day to Night" into the color mix as well. There is differently a fine balance between FX, storytelling, and great riding in this vid. Mike, it seems you have brought all three of them together to produce a very unique story.

In the future it would be great to see a night session if not a night pipe shootout with the same light streak FX. This would make for a more compelling shot since you would not have the luxury of motion tracking your emitter as much as you could have for the day shots.

Great job, can't wait to see your future vids!

This effect, combined with snowboarding footage, while energetic and cool, kind of reminds me of snowboard video games. I.E. Amped for Xbox. The fact that the glowing light streaks do not reflect off of anything else betrays the overall human effect. Perhaps a duplicate latyer with glow or blur and blending mode on might help next time? Pushing the envelope further with multiple lights or multiple hand-offs would be even more creative.

  • ratatat 3 years ago
Simply brilliant and entertaining. The music is a great addition to this video. :) I think it would've been sweeter if the snowboarder was all alone though. :)

I have a new Canon XH A1 and a Mac with FiNAL CUT PRO. How do I render a video to have the HD quality shown in your video using FiNAL CuT PRO? In other words, what settings do I use?
  • Martin Haasdijk 3 years ago
just open a new project and klick on the hd 1080i option when final cut asks you what settings do you want then when your done editing render it out as an hd quiktime file

Everyone is harping on about the light effect which is cool and all but the really impressive work here is the superb dolly movement, especially the snooker table shot - that was slick.

What dolly did you use Mike? I need some tips on how to make cool moving shots like yours.
  • Mike Benson 3 years ago
Thanks! It's actually a DIY dolly make with like 25 bucks of parts at Home Depot. The tripod on top was the only expensive part.
  • toolance 3 years ago
Cool. Got any info on that or any pics?

    Cheers

  • Oh this was stunning! The feel of the film is different from all the others, the scene where he gives the light to the little 13-ish y old rider was such a great move! And for the compositing I realy like the idea with the streaks. And i've been into AE for a while and I have a tip on this one "That was pretty simple, but it became a huge challenge when the camera moved, which meant we had to somehow move the entire generated beam with the camera, while keeping the emitter point on the light." Could you not track the rails (if there are any) and use that tracking data for the camera movement. Maybe you did that, just a thought of mine :P Keep making films, I really liked it!

Congratulations, Mike, that is one of the best sport movies I have ever seen, and certainly the most creative one. So after coming to this movie totally by chance and being very impressed, I watched all of your other movies here, and I have to say that you are extremely talented. Now I am just curious about the professionalism of your movies. Do you do that for a living, or just for fun. I mean editing must take loads of time. Or are you kind of a movie student? Anyway I am very happy somebody takes the effort and creates a perfect little video that entertains and amuses me like that. Thanks!
