See all Show me
Sweet is a weekly comedy show in NYC hosted by Seth Herzog (and his mom!). I caught a few minutes of one of Reggie's performances a few weeks ago. I shot it sideways and then rotated it in Final Cut Pro; let's see how Vimeo handles it.

Looks like it handled the sideways pretty darn well.

    Reggie's just so amazing.

Love the way final cut pro handled it !
It's funny how the thumbnail is so squat.

jakob, can you explain how to upload sideways videos like this?
  • dalas verdugo staff 2 years ago
First you have to shoot them sideways, then you have to rotate them in an editing program that will allow you to set the size of the canvas.

So a normal canvas/sequence in an editing program would have the width x height settings of 640 pixels by 480 pixels, but you go in and adjust these settings to 480 pixels by 680 pixels.

Then you have to do the same size adjustment when exporting your video.

This almost makes me want to upload my vertical film "amulet conception," but it has a shot of my genitals, and I already gave the Internet a year to watch it (on my old website).

The V is terrible, it's slow as hell and there's like 15-20 minutes between each one to arrive. F all the way.

Jakob, you're reading my mind. I had this concept that I wanted to try where video is shot intended for portable playback and the orientation changes from vertical to horizontal. The end user turns their device while watching. I was supposed to get a free Zune from work and was gonna turn this into a regular experiemt. This did not happen however, so I abandoned. Here's an example of what it would look like in this Flash simluation:

Interesting synchronicity-- the earliest use of "vertical-format" video that I know of is a series of video portraits from 1984 called THURSDAY AFTERNOON by none other than (new vimeo user?) Brain One himself. The soundtrack to these videos, still widely available on CD, should be nominated for some kind of "most useful recording ever made" award.

It's OK, with the stomp box, usually used for an electric guitar, maybe reggie could hook up with a sound man and sync his show with a real echo unit, but then that would take the, (what's he doing there?) out of his show. Still, it's just OK.

What's a "real echo unit"? I don't know the distinction.

Hey, Mr. "usually used for an electric guitar," you're obviously an experience gearhound, a real Level 12 Tablegazer, so you've probably heard of the TB-303, yeah? A box, you'll recall, which was meant to be used as rhythmic accompaniment for guitarists, but that would be completely unknown to all of us today were it not for the ingenious bastards who deliberately misused the 303 and by doing so gave birth to the entire genre of acid techno.

I honestly don't think a tape-driven Oberheim or any other classic dub unit would make Reggie's show better. He obviously has enough functionality in his current unit to stimulate his creativitiy and the audience surely isn't going to notice the difference-- most of the people in the average comedy-show crowd probably listen to 128kbps mp3s with earbud headphones!

FYI I replaced my Roland RE101 with the Line6 years ago because it was more reliable, less noisy and far more rugged and portable for long trips plus the sound quality is indistinguishable from the OG! Yay!!!

Oh one other thing, analogue echo devices do not have true looping capability nor instant half-speed/reversal.

Wow, that was really cool! What is that thing he's messing with in his other hand?
