See all Show me
Mirror, Mirror... is a visualization of obsession with your own human body.

In this short audio-visual I wanted to do something with vocals in stead of just instruments. Except for the "thumb piano" you hear twice there's only vocal work which I sing myself.

In this piece I practised a lot with color and light studies. All of this is shot with a 'naked HV30', so without additional accesoires. I wanted to create an audio-visual experience involving this subject. Although some images show a clear message, some do not. They might be intended to symbolize something, I think it's useless to describe every image.

Used: Canon HV30, lights, Rode VideoMic.

Another visceral bonanza. I think your love for the experimental really shows through- especially in your editing. The subject matter is great. I love many of these shots but the 4:25 is the best- kind says (to me) all this obsession crucify the self- very powerful image and you filmed it beautifully! Bravo!
  • Thank you for watching and thinking about this work of mine.

You're videos are my favorite on vimeo! They are very creative and i love the dark subject matter.

Two questions: How much (hv30) resolution is lost after posting here as opposed to just viewing it straight out of FCP? I'm debating the XH A1 vs Hv 30......i'm leaning towards the hv 30 'cause i want a 69 fairlane too.

And how tricky is the Twoneil? Don't you have to purchase an Achromat? Step-up rings? Personally I love the vignetting - some people hate it. Just worried I'll screw myself because I don't understand the adapter thing.

    Good job!
  • Hey Luke, sorry for the delayed message.
Thank you for your words, much appreciated!!

What do you mean with resolution? Do you mean size of the video in pixels? Or something else? Sorry I get confused with technical english sometimes.

XHA1 is of course more professional. Altough I think you can do a lot of stuff with the HV30 too compared to XHA1. If you want a 69 fairlane, then you should go for HV30, haha!

For now I prefer HV30 because it's small, and GOOD. I travel a lot so it's good to travel light.

Twoneil is nice adapter. However it's a static adapter, not vibrating. Problem: You have to keep it almost clinically clean so you won't see any dust on the screen. Difficult sometimes, but you just have to keep giving it attention before you shoot anything. Except for that - it's one nice adapter with great quality bokeh. I don't use achromat, I don't think it's needed with this adapter.

Vignetting will occur when you don't have enough of light where your shooting. It's not a very big problem with Twoneil's adapter, just pay attention.

so visually enticing, it's hard to look away!

and as for the music/sfx, i definitely recommend wearing headphones :)
  • Hey thanks, really appreciated!

I edited this with Headphones so I think listening with headphones will give it a little extra dimension indeed.

p.s. agree with Sebastien, it reminds me of C.Cunningham's 'rubber jonny' but i think i prefer this!
  • Haha, the Rubber Johnny clip is quite amazing. Not sure if this is better.
But that's one nice compliment of course !!

    Fantastic!

What kind of lights did you use?

And what kind of color correction software?
  • Sorry for delayed message.
    Thanks for your comment!

Actually I just used two desk lamps with these kind of lamps in it: klusspullen.nl/images/catalogus/222536.jpg They give you perfect bright white light. Not the best for video, but definately good to try if you don't have a big budget.

I use Final Cut Pro with Magic Bullet for example.

Wow what settings did you set your hv30 to?
  • Hey Paul,
Thanks for the comment. I used Spotlight mode. This gives you 0 gain! Which is perfect if you use a lot of black.

Oh man, I admire the fact that you shot this with a naked HV30. A really amazing video, it's quite disturbing as well, to say the very least. Correct me if I am wrong, but did some of the 'deep vocals' at around 2:30 come off the soundtrack of 'Encounters at the End of the World'? . Really inspiring work man, keep it up!

Our body is art. Art from the universe. It speaks and share the condition of who they are. We all sense through energy we creat to share. Some will be postive's and some will be negative's. We can sense them through our spirit. This performance was very expressive. Through the movement and no facking. Yes he had to act to share but he was comfortable to share what truly is for the moment of performance.
Energy speaks. We don't have to understand exactly what is about but it creat's understanding in our spirit. We don't have to understand about life. We don't have to understand about art. It is what it is and we truly understand's without pin point them. Passion is also like that. It was performance from the universe through him to share and it was a wonderful art and very moving and inspirering. My spirit was happy to watch being what it is and wonderful to witness love of universe through this film.
Thank you very much Rowan and performer. It was a wonderful sharing. He must got very tired after this performing. He gave us best he've got and I can really appreciated them.
Thank you very much for wonderful art of this life through expressive passionate performing.
    Have a wonderful day Rowan.

Such a disturbing beauty, a complete manifestation of excellent art video if I've ever seen one. Reminds me that there's nothing more terrifying and yet more beautiful than us humans... also had a "hellraiser" kind of feeling... MAGNIFICENT...

I see other people saw your similarities with Aphex Twin and Chris Cunningham. I think this is most like CC's "Flex" video. But your style is a bit different. I like it a lot! Keep it up.
