Hey Dan,

I gave it 4 tries, following the tutorial over at Photojojo (photojojo.com/content/tutorials/coffee-caffenol-film-developing/). I think it's quite similar to your method - but no success :-)

I experimented with different developing times (4, 8, 12, 16 minutes), using a cheap film, but just can't find the mistake - i just can't see the photos.

The film I used was a cheap one from a drugstore (Paradies ISO 200).

Do you have any idea...? Would be great to hear from you.

btw...ich hab in deinem Video ein paar deutsche Wörter gesehen...du sprichst deutsch?

tut mir Leid, dass ich so spät antworte- aber Vimeo hat mir
keine Benachrichtigung geschickt, dass Du unter dem Caffenol Video ein Kommentar geschrieben hast.

Besteht das Problem noch?
Ich kenne von "Paradies" eigentlich nur Farbnegativfilm... das geht zwar schon in Caffenol, bloß wird nur die S/W Ebene entwickelt- zudem
bleibt i.d.R. ein heftiger Orangestich übrig.. was es unmöglich macht vom Negativ einen Abzug zu machen.

Falls es doch ein S/W Film ist: Bleibt der Film komplett schwarz oder ist was sichtbar?
Prüfe auch deinen Fixierer- ob der gut klärt.
Gib ein Stück unbelichteten Film in den Fixierer- es sollte ihn in etwa einer Minute komplett durchsichtig klären.

In english:

I only know color neg. Film by "Paradies". Though you can develop color neg in caffenol- only the bw layer will be developed and there will remain an intense orange tint which makes it almost impossible to make a print of the negs.

If it was a b/w film: does the film remain completely black or is there anything slightly to see?
Also check your fixer- to make sure it works.
Put some undeveloped film in fixer and it should clear it completely in about a minute.

Vielen Dank für deine Antwort - inzwischen habe ich das Problem tatsächlich gelöst. Obwohl ich in der Apotheke explizit Natriumcarbonat verlangt habe, haben sie mir Natriumbicarbonat verkauft - Backpulver. Ich habe den Fehler zunächst nicht bemerkt und den Fehler in den Entwicklungszeiten gesucht. Habe bestimmt fünf Filme verbraten, bis ich draufgekommen bin. Letztlich habe ich dann einen APX 100 entwickelt - hat super geklappt und sehr schöne Bilder ergeben.

Danke für dein Tutorial und die Hilfestellung!

I used baking soda instead of washing soda - that was the mistake. When I noted that, everything turned out fine!

Das ergibt durchaus Sinn :-)

Waschsoda gibt es übrigens sehr billig bei Rossmann Drogerien("Holste" Waschsoda).

woooah. i'm looking for a cheaper way to get my BW super 8 film developed, and i'm really considering this. one question, though: do you NEED to use the calbe a300 fixer? i can't seem to find a way to buy it...
also, thanks for posting this- it was really well done.

Tested a short clip using your method on some expired 16mm film...not too great but it did give me a real "old film" look.

THAT is REALLY DIY Developing!! :D Dan, that really impressed me a lot! I will definitely try that out for sure :) That's how MacGyver would develop B&W Film!

DAS nenne ich WIRKLICH DIY Entwicklung! :D Dan, damit hast du mich wirklich beeindruckt! Ich werde das definitiv mal selber ausprobieren :) So würde MacGyver Schwarzweiß Film entwickeln.

Hi,

hast du ne Idee ob dieser Mix auch K40 8mm Film entwickeln kann? Wird ja von Kodak nicht mehr entwickelt, und auch sonst nirgendwo...

Im Prinzip sollte es gehen; natürlich kommt nur SW raus.
Auf jeden Fall sollte das Material überbelichtet werden.
