Jazz Legacy Productions has been dedicated in producing great jazz recordings from up-and-coming musicians as well as icons. And their latest is no exception to the rule. The Cooker’s debut recording “Warriors” is hybrid of musicians that have and continue the “Hard-Bop” legacy. The group consists of Davis Weiss on trumpet and bandleader, George Cables-Piano, Billy Harper-Tenor Saxophone, Billy Hart-Drums, Cecil McBee-Bass, Eddie Henderson-Trumpet/Flugelhorn,and Craig Handy-Alto Saxophone/Flute.
The disc was a tribute to the late Freddy Hubbard and his legendary 1965 Blue Note Recording “The Night of the Cookers: Live at Club La Marchal.” These guys cover Hubbard’s Bop classic “The Core,” to George Cable’s “Suite Rita Suite, Part 2,” to Billy Harper’s “Capra Black.” Between all the members of this all-star septet, these musicians have played on well over 1,000 records. Also, these guys have backed and played with some of the greatest Bop musicians in recorded jazz. So, this disc is a reflection and their musical experiences and the foundation of where Bop is going.
David Weiss acts as both arranger, bandleader, and trumpeter; something he takes both seriously and with pride. Having been arranger and band leader for Freddy Hubbard, The Cookers “was like riding a bike” he adds.
