When you get up early, magic things happen!

This was all shot with my V1U while camping. No lens adapter, just the stock lens. Filmed entirely in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York at about 5am. The nights make the air cooler than the water, when the morning comes, a nice mist forms. It's a magic time that only lasts for about 30 minutes.

I didn't actually SEE any Sirens...but I swear I could hear them...just like in the music! (the music is something I bought from Music2Hues). Relax and enjoy.

    So beautiful, again.

I watched it, I clicked "LIKE", and I still watched twice more.
(...too bad you don't let us download the original...)

Thanks Makoto. I've restricted downloads because most of these clips are for sale on the footage hub at Artbeats. Since the downloads here are of such high quality, it would be a breach of contract for me to put these out "free". Even though they are compressed and edited, they could be used elsewhere (in SD). Just being cautious. My next one will be downloadable, and it's coming soon!

Yes Paul, magic of nature. Even if you must get up so early to catch that special moment.

Could you just tell me how you exported this? Bitrate/codec?
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
    Stephen,
Sure, Its a bit complicated, but it works! I shot everything at 1080i 29.97, Vimeo needs 720 24p. So I make a 720p downconvert in AE. Render to the Pro Res codec. Take that 720p file and use compressor to make the H.264 compressed version using the settings Vimeo recommends, using the highest bit rate possible (5000).
  • Stephen Lewis plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Paul,
Could I achieve the same quality by just exporting my timeline as a QT reference file and then going to compressor for the 720p H.264 file?
  •
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
I haven't tried that but it may work. My problem is I had shot this in HDV 1080 interlaced. To then go to 720 progressive, my first time the image was 4x3 in the frame! The 'ol pixel aspect ratio thing. Ughh. So then I went to AE to make sure the size was rectangular 16x9. I guess it all depends on what you are starting with for video, the size and frame rate and interlaced or progressive.
  • Maarten Toner plus 1 year ago
If you are using Final cut you can always set the timeline to square pixels keeping aspect ration in tact when exporting to compressor > vimeo

Great tip! I'll try that next time.

    Paul,
Very nice work. Well composed scenes as well as editing to you music score. It was really surreal looking.

lovely.. It reminded me of my mornings at scout camp in the 60's. I remember the water warmer than the air on some of those mornings. Well done great music and boat shots near the end.

how did you do that shot at 3.50 and 4.22 ????
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
I shoot from my canoe! Since I go out alone, I sit in my canoe (backwards...I sit in the usual front seat but turned around, so I'm more centered in the boat), I keep my camera on a small still tripod in between my legs and I use a small electric motor so I don't rock the boat by paddling. I point the camera at about 2 o'clock and when I want to roll tape, depending on the wind, I kill the motor and drift! Works quite well. If it's windy, you can't do it much at all.

    Thanks marius.
I was wondering that too, because those shots seem a lot more than what one can do with IndiSlider.

Its really mesmerizing. I like the visual story in which the water gets clearer as time progresses. The shot at 2:40 is really amazing. Did you shoot all this on a single day? And also did you use indislider?
  • Paul Frederick 11 months ago
Thanks Eshwar, this was from 2 different mornings. I didn't have the indiSlider yet, the moving shots are from my canoe. I place a tripod between my legs and use an electric motor, then kill it and glide when I want to shoot.

How did you get the orange hue to the shots? Was it in post?

Wonderfull. Whay I really meant in my previous comment is how did you get 4 min and 47 sec of HD-vdieo on a non-Plus Vimeo account? If I save a 3 min and 30 sec in mov H.264 it's bigger than 500 MB. Ho do you do that? Which program do you use to convert your video in mov.

    Many thanks
