1. Music video made of paper. Svelte: 'Grind Your Bones'
Our very first music video - actually our very first of anything really.

Each frame of us playing was printed, cut out, placed into a small set and photographed frame by frame.

The music video was made by us (the band members) using only what we had available: A DV video camera, a colour printer, paper, scissors and a digital stills camera.

Brillianttt!!!! How long did it take to make this?
I will be waiting for your other works.
  • Svelte 3 years ago
Thanks Albiberon, if we'd worked on it full time it would've taken about 6 weeks.

Your description suggests that all the movement is animated frame by frame, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Looks very nice though.
  • Svelte 3 years ago
That's correct. We filmed ourselves on a white background with a DV camera and edited the clip. We then printed out each frame out at 12 frames a second, cut each frame out and shoot them in the little paper sets frame by frame.

I guess that means it's not stop motion but we weren't sure what else to call it!

how in the world did you type that text upside down?!

Indeed! I've setup the same page on my own server as well for fast referencing but with a few minor adjustments ;)

    So creative! So cool!
Did you print the frames from final cut?
  • Svelte 3 years ago
Yeah, we exported them from Final Cut using Quicktime conversion and chose a frame rate of 12. What we should've done is de-interlaced the footage first then used a frame rate of 12.5 - but hey, it's FINISHED!

    it looks great

Don't worry, pretty soon interlacing artifacts are gonna look retro anyway—I bet there'll be an iMovie effect just like the "old film" effect—so you're just ahead of your time :) It's a great piece, from concept, to music, to execution.

OK... so, let me see if I have this correct...

You didn't spend a couple hundred thousand dollars to create this same effect through a professional production studio... simply because you didn't have the money? ...WOW! ....go figure... :-)

    Good job...

i am blown away. to know you were able to get this done with such humble tools is very inspiring. what kind of editing hardware did you have in terms of macs and so forth? do you think imovie could handle this job?

Well I'll say this I thought you were taken from MTV or VH1 and put on here, which made me think that some one was going to get booted for putting copy written material on here.

It's refreshing, to watch something made so well, not even with the best equipment, just creativity and drive. By people who's main objective isn't even filming/video. Your musicians who decided to make your own music video. Good job it looked fun.

wow, Really cool. I really appreciate that you guy sdid this the old school way. What app did you use to out it all together?
  • Svelte 3 years ago
Hey Malcolm, we edited the DV footage in Final Cut, printed out the frames, shot it all using a digital stills camera, processed the raw files in Bridge, made image sequences using Motion (allowed us to zoom and re-crop shots) then put it all back together in Final Cut.
