amazing as usual Phil...Vimeo was designed for you and the equipment you use!

(p.s. u may remember me from our wedding film emails a while ago now, i loved your docu-style approach)

Nice work. How do you handle appearance releases when shooting on the street? I'm guessing that this material may be used commercially at some point. Do you find it necessary to get written consent, or just assume that people out and about don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy?
Having never done any for-profit work outside of the U.S., I don't know if rules vary from country to country.
    Thanks!

You should add 'The legend that is' to the start of your name. This is spellbinding work.

I'll forward this to Svetlana, my friend in Siberia - she will be extremely proud. The usual image of the place is nothing like this. This being luscious and real.

I love how the people are posed in all of your films. No one ever has a fake smile or expression... they are genuinely happy like the bride or kinda pissed off like the factory workers or slightly confused like the boy. Great cinema!

Exquisite! Can you comment on the color grading tools you used in MBL for the shot at 1:06?
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
very basic grading. Had strong PP settings Steve in camera. 1.06 i think is natural colours

    Cool as always Phil!
    The helicopter shots were fantastic.

So, are we supposed to make random guesses? Here goes a few...
    Staircase @ 1:55
    Barge @ 3:10
    Fire at 4:03 - (?)

I liked the concrete river and the fisherman. And what gives with the antennas? Obviously a big feature.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
couple of portraits, the helicopter shots. the bridge shots, kid on slide, two kids together, the tight sunset shots.
  • Old Dead Eye 3 years ago
Yeah I was definately going to say those two kids 1:18(trying to throw us off with the DOF.heh) and at a push the sunset/timelapse stuff. Is this true 2.35:1 (if so what lens?)or did you just shoot further back and add borders?

Gorgeous stuff. Loved Lt Kije music too.

Some of the river pictures reminded me of the amazing early Russian colour images you can see here - made by combining 3 filtered black and white negatives.

This deserves to be seen. Why aren't you the one behind the feature films we watch? I have a quick question for you. Do you find the music first and than cut to that, or do you edit it first than choose what music sounds right? Because lately I've been feeling like I'm making a music video because I cut to the beat. Any help?
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
it varies. i knew i wanted this piece when I was almost finished filming. I listen to my music think about it and go from there

cutting to beat is east to do, as long as the shot lengths vary it sould be ok

You really did this without a Letus? Impressive, there is a LOT of DOF in some shots!

the description said with and without!! All chopper shots and half a dozen more done without letus
  • astute 3 years ago
Ah, my bad. I read the sentence the wrong way. I thought you asked people to guess that all the shot were done without a letus. Its still early...
  •
  • Rogerio Alves 3 years ago
How did you have the camera setup what was the picture profile? What kind of lens did you use? How different do you think this film would have looked with the Letus extreme? Does the Ultimate really show a noticeable difference in picture quality on a big screen TV?
  •
  • Rogerio Alves 3 years ago
How does the focus work with the extreme do you leave the EX1 lens on autofocus while you manually focus the other?
  •
  • Doug Z plus 3 years ago
Phil, you always manage to use available light very intelligently and this piece is no exception. In my experience it can be difficult to expose a subject outdoors normally without all sorts of other things in the frame blowing out. Are you ever using filters to expose the sky in bright shots?

Also, is that the Sigma 20mm 1.8 at :30 and :58?

Loved the fire shots. Great editing. Thanks for sharing!

amazing images from russia. I love it.. you shoul come to brazil . There a lot of places to explore your way to dop and exotic views.. You should shot in North Korea. .
I hope to reveal as soon as possible with ex1 and letus my country Brazil to the world . So many different people and places.. Nice Job ... I will shot some images with my FX1, nothing compare with you . But am Learnig... The best shots tha i ever seen so natural of life in our world..
  •
  • toolance 3 years ago
Upsettingly good as usual Phil. It looked to me that most shots were without the letus and I think I prefer them without. From what I've seen the EX1 has pretty shallow DOF anyway, especially when zoomed.

Anyone got a used one for sale?
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
95% done with Letus Ultimate. Letus doesn't have to be shallow DOF, it gives a filmic organic look to images. The EX1 has a small fraction of the ability to get shallow DOF of the Letus.

But thanks very much! It was the helicopter shots, a couple of portraits and two end shots without the Letus.

    Fantastic photography. Great job.
Some question. You applied filters in post-production or only edited?.
I do not advise to use EX1/EX3 in helicopters.
I noticed the problem of rolling shooter in control of the helicopter in 00:11. Today many people have big Full HD LCD / Plasma TV with more than 40". Will be seen.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
what are you talking about at 00:11 I see no rolling shutter problem? I was in a helicopter in the Canadaian Rockys yesterday for 90 minutes and everything was superb. There is no problem with rolling shutter and filming out of a helicopter Italo!!
  • Italo Valerio 3 years ago
Check the contole in the hand of pilot. the circle wobble, dancing, change the circle format. Appears to be gelatin. it´s an little technical detail. Not affect the your great job.
Of course this observation is´nt an problem to big concern. But is an risc to final video in the edition step.
  • Italo Valerio 3 years ago
So, i resolved make new analysis, based in the parallax error theory (2 or more humans can to make differents measures).
I download the mp4 version and play step by step, slow motion. Now i see much more rolling shooter problems. Only external scenes like rivers and right side is not easy to see because the smooth motion and no have basic forms. It´s possible see an little this effect in the bridge scene. Bridge in relation to horizon.
The all rest out of helicopter is perfect.
I invite the professionals cam operators to study how to sets are needed to reduce this effect in CMOS camera
  • Andrew Clunie 3 years ago
I think you are referring to the pilot moving, caused by the vibration of the helicopter. This is no rolling shutter.
  •
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
you really shouldn't over analyse a compressed mp4
