22. Me right now: Jans bare steadyhand trick
1 year ago
Demo of my bare steadyhand trick holding my beloved 300 gramms Sanyo baby. (Do not forget to rise your left pinky and use your right middle finger to balance Xacti + Century Fish Eye). Also quite handy is Jans 'spider' pod trick with the velcro attached Xacti Remote. Brand name: Gorillapod from joby.com (€57)

    Jan, you're a nutter but I love you. :)

It's perfectly true that a good handling technique is all important for those handheld shots. And like most things in life, it requires practice, practice, and yet more practice. Now, where's my tripod...

Thanks to you Jan van der Meer for the pointers. Of course I'll try the first technique. I may try the second also. The second looks like it's an abbreviated Fig Rig although not as rigid.

Hey Jan it's me again Faris. I was captivated by Sanyo Xacti since I saw couple of your videos weeks ago and was thinking to get one but still deciding.

I read a few bad reviews by other users on the net saying that Xacti HD1010 isn't really good so, I thought I would like to ask your advice considering you own it.

Anyway, what is 60 fields-per-second means?

Thanking you in advance Jan. Cheers.

Since 1986 I've worked with nearly all popular cams. This is the first one I'm really really fond of cos its HD quality, small, light, excellent video & photo's and is half the price as others with that quality, but a lot depends on who's operating it as always!
Every camera (even EX1) how good it was at first, someone will moan about something on it later! All Xacti HD1000 specifications explination tricks and forum at steves-digicams.com. So don't wait any longer just have pleasure from today on Faris! If you need an instructor I'll be pleased to come over! A Xacti is cheaper though! :-)

    Great tips!
I like the use of the Gorilla...I think I'll get one to try it out.
I'm debating between that or the Manfrotto Modosteady, but the modosteady is a lot more expensive, and as far as I can tell from sample videos, it doesn't create much smoother video in the end.

This is a lot simpler and less awkward to use in public.
The Gorilla also can flip out to be used in so many useful ways easily, so with these kinds of techniques, it makes for a great budget solution.

Thanks again - please keep the tips coming! :)

Dont forget the wide angle, a 0.5x lens gives half lesser shaky pics and also better sound recordings during cu interviews!
  • Philip Cotsford 1 year ago
I use the Xacti standard wide angle lens - seems to work really well.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is a "cu interview"?
  • Jan van der Meer plus 1 year ago
sorry its short for close up interviews

Hi Jan, just registered to Vimeo after searching for further updates to your year old N95 Jancam video which you posted on Youtube. It was your idea which lead me to develop an N95 bodycam, which gives you both hands free whilst recording yourself, idea for personal presentations and alike. Its similar to those bodycams that are used in movies, and films, however, my N95 Bodycam is far more simpler, and lightweight.

Keep up the good work my friend, and greetings from Finland.!

Your welcome Jan.! I will post up some videos soon when its finished. Its still in development right now, and undergoing trials. Had some problems with the angle adjuster, but fixed that now. As soon as the fully functional prototype is finished, I will contact you Jan.

    Take care.!

Jan, thank you kindly for such GREAT tips!!

I have one question. The gorilla pod you are using, there are several sizes, is the one you are using the largest they have to offer or is it the medium sized one? I believe they have the small medium and large. The one you use here is clearly not the small, but I can't tell if it is the medium or large.

    Thanks again!

I think (not sure) I have the middle sized one!

Hi Jan thanks to you I'm now a proud Xacti HD1000 owner =)
And now I'm trying to get my hands on that century fisheye too..

But I was wondering, how did you get the lens to fit? I saw that it fits 37mm's, and i looked but couldn't locate any step rings for 37 to 40mm.

I'm still kinda new to this, so any help or links to get me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -Ronald
  • Jan van der Meer plus 1 year ago
High Ronald Congrats! I'll get my bonus from Xacti now! ( ? ). The exact words and fittings are: look for a step down ring from 40,5 to 37mm !!
  •
  • RONALD ASHBURN 1 year ago
Awesome thanks for your help Jan! just found the ring on ebay for $6. And lol sure if i ever come across any of the sanyo people I'll tell 'em about you. =)
  • Jan van der Meer plus 1 year ago
I bought a dozen for our DVC members with the HD1000 also but now I found out that the New Xacti HD1010 probably has a big factury failure because the same ring which is fitting perfect in the HD1000 is just a little to small for the HD1000 and falls out! Don't think it is coursed by the ring. NOW IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR THE SANYO FACTORY Do you (or anyone else have an HD1010) and is the step down ring 40.5 to 37mm working ok?

    awesome tips!!
hey jan, i am thinking about getting a new (or actually my first) camcorder for my birthday, and i kind of fell in love with the xacti e1 (the waterproof one). my vimeo friends told me you know about many cameras, so maybe you can tell me if this one is a good choice or not?

    thanks :D

  • Jan van der Meer plus 1 year ago
mMMMM I think you better buy the new HD1010 with an EWA Marine underwater bag (plastic!) Because you also need a wide angle for good shots! Have a look at one of my first video's my wife swimming with a Mermaid (dugong) was done with my favorite Century fish-eye! I know it costs a lot more all together but if you are serious and didn't put your money on the Icelandbank you can invest in a better future with this setup!
  • HannahMai plus 1 year ago
hmm sounds pretty good, but more like something i would save up for in the future, for now it is not really affordable for me. also, as this will be my first camera, i might just buy something cheaper with maybe less quality for the beginning. don't you think that is a good decision?
also, waterproof because i am not good with my gadgets, i once dropped a new digital camera into the toilet... well, i will definetly remember your recommendation for when i have more money available!
do you have any experience with the e1 though?
