Van Bo is an "Outsider" artist living in Sausalito, CA. "Outsider" in three senses: He is unique in that he doesn't live 'safely' in the confines of the ordinary - He says and does what he wants; He literally lives and works outside... his studio being a vacant street corner; And his artistic output is of the genre "Outsider Art".
Van Bo sets up outside the Seahorse fun place at the Sausalito waterfront. The ambient minimalist is the band tuning up. His studio is the not-far-away street corner of the main drag into town. Bo talks his history… philosophy of painting… as static shots of his 'finest' are intermingled with his monolog. He plays his beat-up three-quarters keyboard electric piano and sings impromptu commentary prior to explaining being in jail the week before. Then, the long walk pushing his perennial shopping cart full of Bo Art up to Smittie's bar where he will set up for the evening.
Van Bo hangs at Taste of Rome, the poetry/jazz cafe' on the waterfront. Early evening, La Tigresa recites 'Poetry Erection' (Parental Discretion). Bo paints a lot (with monolog). Then comes the excitement! The Gates 5 Houseboat Coop Annual Party. Bo's van… More Bo painting in the midst of Old Hippies.. Pot & Alcohol.. R&R… Dancing…. my, what fun! Then farewell philosophy before Bo rides into the sunset.
Long shots reflect the long pauses in local life-- It's called "Living on Bo Time"..... so try to just go with it.
All audio is whatever was happening on the scene when I arrived... mostly from Bo's paint-smeared silver radio.
