Fantastic work. Really inspirational stuff. How is the smoke effect created? I would guess blurred semi-transparant particles.

hey, this is great stuff! one question though....what did you make this with? when you said 'processing' at the top, is that the name of the program?

    just a guess...
    After Effects+ a Damn lot of 3Dstroke plugin!? :]
but i cant seem to figure out the other effects used for the smoke, and the dotted edges of those tentacles ...
    care to share\validate?

great piece of art, buddy! :]
    Boards of Canada rock!!

    it's not after effects :)

processing is a simplified java environment for digital artists where with some knowledge of programming, math and design, nearly everything is possible.

processing.org/ > is the main site for the tool.

    wow..i had NO IDEA!!
frikkin Amazing!! :] thanx for the info!
i guess ill stick to AE, cause math & programming arent my strong sides :]

you can use a little math and programming in AE...

beautiful stuff! is it all in processing or bits of mathAnimation composed in a compositing software?

i started learning processing but cant even imagine doing stuff like that with code..

anyway, good work keep posting stufff

    Thanks everyone for the feedback,
by the way it's %100 Processing (programming *math), all the shading too (dense noise patterns of transparent ellipses).
The underlying concept of all the motion is multiple cos/sin oscillators which create the curves and direction, the camera z is also hooked to one of these oscillators, which i hope, creates a holistic sense of motion between lots of different elements.

Any chance of you opening up the source code for those of us less gifted?
  •
  • Glenn Marshall 1 year ago
haha you kidding?! the best way to learn is to do it yourself, honestly... There's more info however on the concepts behind the video on my blog butterfly.ie -you can write to me about something specific and I'll try and help -by the way I'm working on doing an HD version which I'll upload soon.

Hi Glenn, thanks for the link to your blog. I am brand new to processing, and it seems processing is often about learning by example. But I can completely understand/respect keeping the source code closed. Once again, thanks for a simply inspirational piece of art and programming.

    Thanks,
I don't mind sharing bits and pieces, but seriously, by the time you figure out my enigmatic messy code, you could have worked it out yourself, and learned a lot more generally, but I'm glad to help out if I can, even though I'm relatively new to Processing myself.

It looks cool, but to me the timing seems just a little off. For example when the squigly "sperm cells" jump off the branches at 1:10. I would've had them jump off precisely at the moment the beat sets in.

This is cool, I still think it's the best one of the BoC series.
Interestingly, the more I work with Processing the more I realise the interesting patterns that arise from the combination of simple behaviours (emergence).

    Glenn Marshall ,
My name is VINICIUS NASCIMENTO and I am a junior curator of the One Minute Festival Brazil.

The One Minute Festival is now online and permanent. The Festival launches new themes every month, and gives money awards to the best videos. We have different permanent categories.
Check out all the awards available at minuteplanet.com
If your video is longer than 1 minute, you can edit it to have up to 60 seconds, and then submit it.
Take some time to watch some of the videos already awarded:
