Communication and media expert Howard Rheingold interviews Trebor Scholz about the themes and aspirations of the 2011 Digital Media and Learning Conference in Long Beach, CA, Mar. 3-5, 2011.
Scholz, who teaches in the Department of Culture and Media Studies at Eugene Lang College and The New School for Liberal Arts in New York City, is on the conference committee and is overseeing an innovative plan for the integration of social media throughout the conference.
Scholz touches on how higher education institutions are looking to shift away from older models of teaching and offers these suggestions: "Well I think there has to be a really good understanding of the outside/after-school space...an understanding of how the discussive intensity of the class can be continued until the next class session. For instance, through continuing discussions on Seesmic or finding ways of having Facebook 'open office hours', things like that."
