Journalists are coping with the rising information flood by borrowing data visualization techniques from computer scientists, researchers and artists. Some newsrooms are already beginning to retool their staffs and systems to prepare for a future in which data becomes a medium. But how do we communicate with data, how can traditional narratives be fused with sophisticated, interactive information displays?

Great presentation! Glad I could put a face and voice to a few more heavy hitters. I agree with Nigel. It seems for the most part now, unfortunately, most visualizations are seduced by the avalanche of information they can present verses the amount the should. The key will be grabbing the viewer's attention, then conveying it in the best way possible, because, eventually in media and work the question won't be if I should care about the visualization or not but rather which one.

Absolutely agree with your comment there James. Visualizing data is tricky in that you need to pull out the right data and present based on some context... the viewers context typically. One of the key things in my opinion is always how a person interacts with the data ...the end goal is to allow people to get what they need in the most intuitive way possible.

Wow, I can't believe I sat through an hour of that. Not complaining mind you, I was just wondering what *I* could make a data visualization out of.

    Great work.

    Thanks for the doc :)

Data visualisation is the the quintessence of analytical thinking which is a great part of design in all shapes and sizes, and thus by far the most sophisticated task for a graphic designer like me for example. I'm really eager to see when infographics as a tool are going to be adopted on a governmental level around the world as a tool for solving problems of all kinds.
