Fall of 2009 I had taken my Spirit 2-Meter RC Sailplane with a SkyAssistant Altimeter onboard and flew to just under 3,000 feet in altitude from ground level... I could have gone higher, however I was flying under the darkness of a bottom of a cloud and wanted to fly back up field as the thermal was slowly moving down field... Well as I fly back toward the field and the Spirit 2-Meter sailplane moved out from under the dark cloud base and into the brilliant bright blue sky I had lost complete sight of it... after just a few seconds and not being to pick it back up I started what I thought were gentle circles in the sky hoping to pick it back up in reality was doing a slow spiral toward the hard ground... At a time it had reached a speed of 90mph and at one point losing altitude at a rate of 7,348fpm... I had picked up a flash in the sky and reacquired the Spirit where it had lost 1,944 feet in altitude and only 1,037 feet from impact...!!! When I caught sight and reacquired the Spirit, I was amazed that I wasn't seeing balsa bits like the tail feathers and wings shredding off that plane...!!! I had slowly raised the nose up out of it's slow, but fast, spiral death spin and flew it a bit to see that everything was still intact and working, then in the end to land it for a more complete visual inspection... Hmmm, maybe use my 2-Meter Spirit for Dynamic Soaring...???

Really, flying high (um, in the air i mean) can be allot of fun but also very dangerous at its worst... If you are new, then practice on you're not blinking reflexes and once under a cloud, stay there and don't fly out from under it into the brilliant bight blue sky cuz you might not be so lucky...
