wondeful animation. Had a massive fight with my girlfriend and I think it might be over and this is just heart wrenching to watch.
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
THanks Colin. This is the most emotion I have ever put into my work. During the animation, there were times my wife and I butted heads. I couldn't animate and had to quit until we worked things out. Then I could get back to animating.

Wow. I really appreciate all of your comments. I was really bummed last night finding out that this film got rejected from the Sundance film festival, but then to wake up and read all of your comments put me back on track. Being an artist/animator is way too emotional of the profession! :)
  • Billy Allison 1 year ago
My film has nothing on yours, but i feel your pain, being rejected really does sock it to you, last year it was turned down by all but a couple of British festivals, and i know it sounds like I'm bitter, but many that were below the quality of mine, never mind yours were accepted, and shown and won prizes ... :( this film is beautiful and you should keep submitting to where ever you can .. have you submitted to Annecy?
  • Alex Hart 1 year ago
I've been rejected by Sundance too! It's not a very exclusive club we're in as Sundance rejects, but it's all subjective. That festival certainly has an agenda that maybe our films just didn't match.

The quality and heart in your work hit us all over the head, so I suspect Sundance screeners just thought it wasn't gritty enough, or didn't feature enough gender identity debate, or didn't challenge anyone's ideas about science and god. Or maybe your film was too literal and to-the-point for them.

Or maybe they had pancakes for breakfast that morning instead of eggs.

F*ck sundance. This is unforgettable. It is touching and beautiful and retains the inimitable emotive power of dance, while tastefully exploiting the freedom of creativity in animation. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it. It does exactly what you said you'd hoped it would in the behind the scenes - provokes insight.
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
Thanks for your comments. I feel like Sundance socked me in the gut, but all your comments are like medicine.

by far the best animation I've seen in as long as I can remember. You should be SO proud. Thanks for sharing!

  • Matthew Borgatti 1 year ago
I haven't seen such confident, well structured animation in years. There's something of Burne Hogarth in it, where the really solid strong anatomy highlights the stretch and distortion. I also love the use of motion lines.

Each frame is a praiseworthy painting in and of itself, and there's this wonderful fluidity to the splashes and effects that puts me in mind of Michel Gagné.

This is a beautiful piece of animation.
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
I'm glad you liked the efx work. I worked with Michel for 7 years in animation. He was my mentor and continues to be my friend and my inspiration. I give him all the credit in the world for what I've learned.
  • Matthew Borgatti 1 year ago
I'm currently working in animation, and previously did practical effects for film. I feel that digital effects, although allowing artists a tremendous field for experimentation, are somehow safe. There's this push towards mediums that can always be tweaked, mothered, and be changed at the last minute by fickle producers.

I have infinite respect for you and Michel to produce work that requires both art and mechanical precision while the world is closing in on traditional animation. I feel that the world is poorer for not embracing traditional animation, effects, and single artist driven films.

Thank you so much for making this.
  • Max 1 year ago
Absolutely agree 100%! I too have admired Michel Gagné's work/ style for years now & was reminded when I watched this.

Beautiful film in every way; so elegant, fluid & organic...

I echo Matthew's comments; well done & thank you for making such meaningful Art Ryan!

Mr. Woodward i would just like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on such an artistic feat. After watching the behind the scenes of your production and seeing how much thought and work went into it, i couldn't help but feel so incredibly touched, moved and inspired for i am also a young animator myself with such an appreciation for the arts. This was so beautifully executed and managed to evoke such emotion and life, something animation can't always seem to do. I have been a fan of your work for a while, especially your style of life drawing. After combing through all of your hollywood cinematics I had no idea you were so gifted in pretty much all aspects of animation. I believe you are truly talented and despite not being selected for Sundance i think you have created something incredibly touching and moving and with such a unique style.
As professional interest and curiosity, could you tell me if this animation was shot on 1s? The fluidity of it was just so beautiful and precise i can't help but ask?
Also in viewing alot of your animatics would it be safe to assume that you had edited most of them if not all of them in After Effects? It is definitely a incredible to achieve such looks and effects.
    Again absolutely brilliant work!
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
Mihir, thank you for your kind words. I'm motivated by your comments. Most of the animation is on ones, some two's and just a second or two on fours because I forgot to fix it! :) Yes, I use after effects to do all my animatics.

  •
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
I am truly humbled by all of your comments. I did not anticipate such a response. Sometimes, as artists, we create things just because we have to in order satisfy some unknown motivation. Some urge that doesn't go away until we create something that derived by an emotional inspiration. And we do it not knowing or even caring if it's going to be accepted by others. But when it does receive a broad acceptance from peers and the general public, it's very sweet. Thank you all again for your comments. I read every one of them with absolute respect.

Not since Dudok De Wit have I been so mesmerised by animation. A masterpiece in my opinion.
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
Dudok De Wit is one of my greatest inspirations. No wonder you noticed that. Really glad you liked the film Frank.
  • Billy Allison 1 year ago
Yeah, even Dudok De Wit's cartoon comedy stuff has the flow that we tend not to see these days .. and Michael is a nice guy too :D
  • Frank G plus 1 year ago
I'm still going back to try and study your work. But each time I forget and get lost in the animation. Oh, and went and looked up Michael DDW's work again as well. Same problem. Mesmerising.
  • I saw Michael DDW's "Father and Daughter" a number of years ago, it humbled me, and has always stayed with me, just as I am sure this piece will.

    Simply stunning Ryan.

  •
  • Andrew Cothill 1 year ago
I can't really plus anything everyone has said so i'll just say: 1:29... when beauty is seperate it seems like truth and can stay unquestioned and touching. However, 2:41, when beauty is made real and we see all sides, it seems attainable and less sublime. What i took from this animation is that people can be sublime and mundane - but they can do beautiful and truthful things, much like you have done with this film.

Thank you for doing this and sharing it.
  • Ryan J Woodward plus 1 year ago
I love your insight Andrew. I love hearing about individual interpretations. It's so amazing how people pull different meaning out of this. It means that people are personalizing the animation and that is exactly what I was hoping would happen. Thanks for sharing yours!

I love the texture, the song, the style of the animation. Its gorgeous, quite inspiring!! For sure one of the best animation I have ever seen in my entire life. Simply like that: BEAUTIFUL AND TOUCHING. It changed something inside me, and whenever I need some inspiration, I will come back here and watch it over and over again.
