This is a truly cinematic music video, it cries out to be watched on a LARGE screen. I love the camera work the effects subtle but extremely effective. The colours perfect and the music was superb, I have to check these guys out now. An entertaining dark video that seemed to have a warmth and hope. Showcased it here marktomlinson.com/2010/09/middle-class-rut-new-low.html
    Thanks for entertainment.

I'm so glad you did this. This is a great band, and they need to be heard. Fell in love the first time listening to "I Guess You Could Say" Much love from Minnesota, and Excellent Work. is this the Cannon 7D, or Red One by chance?
  • LANCE DRAKE plus 1 year ago
    Agreed. Red MX.

I like it. Transitions work well. I have a question - how do you get Vimeo to only show the scope portion of the video? Do you have to compress it in such a size and then upload?
  • LANCE DRAKE plus 1 year ago
thanks nicholas. I simply exported and uploaded a non letterbox version and vimeo automatically kept the proper sizing. vimeo rules.
  • Nicholaus Goossen plus 1 year ago
Right. So this was RED MX with anamorphic? Or did you just crop? Man I've been cutting and exporting my own videos forever now, and I don't even know how to create a non-letterbox version of my scope pieces. Where's the button in Compressor? I got a new vid I want to upload like that. Thanks bro. Again, nice cinematic work. Respect.

I'm blown away man. I love your transitions! How long did it take you to plan your design, or were there a lot of happy accidents?
  • LANCE DRAKE plus 1 year ago
No accidents. On this size budget and insane amount of shots we couldn't afford to lose a single shot or minute. Story boarded every shot with stills and methodically mapped out the location. Had a 2nd unit camera picking off all the b roll that really made the video what it is. I've made a lot of "let's see what happens" style videos and I've learned that if you want to really have a vision, you have to be beyond prepared and make some real choices in pre production. I guess because budgets are tight these days a lot of videos are kind of finding life in the edit. It's a shame because I think its lowering the artistry in some ways. Obviously navigating production and finding those accidents is a part of the process, but I won't be relying on that mentality ever again. Appreciate the support.

  • So nice! Great choices. Shooting on the fly can be fun but good planning normally has the best results. What sort of lenses were you using?
  • LANCE DRAKE plus 1 year ago
We were using cooke primes. more specifics contact larkin seiple.

speed panchros. very light and incredibly tiny. Great for steadicam and for softening the image.

Great work Lance - all the preparation shows. I agree with your comment about not relying on happy accidents. I still have my boy scout merit badge - Be Prepared - on my desk. Like a scar from Pandora to keep me on my toes.

Great Video Lance. Loved how everything flew together with those transitions. This video is blowin up on youtube but sadly you arent getting the credit for it :/ Glad I found it on here, its more clear cut and the audio is more intense. Leave it to youtube to screw up a good video.

And I was reading the comments on here, you said See Tags for the quote at the end. That mean Seymour Cassel is the originator? Ive been doing research on that quote for a few hours and your input in the comments is all I have found.

Anyways, great Vid Lance. You'll go far if you keep it up bro. :)
  • LANCE DRAKE plus 1 year ago
Thanks Chris, people watching the video is all the credit I need. For some reason the YouTube version isn't HD and if they change the file it will lose all its hits (again). People have been very curious about that quote and story line, I don't want to say directly what it means. If you read the lyrics and know the band's history, I think it paints a pretty good picture what's going on in the video. As for the quote at the end of the video, stay tuned...

I saw this on youtube and knew right away you used the MX. Nicely handled too.

I'm rather curious about the data you shot in and also your lenses.

Oh and thumbs up for having Seymour Cassel do a split second of dialogue.
