Tonight there was a lunar eclipse (eclipse of the moon). It lasted from roughly 8:15pm to 2:25am (GMT 3rd-4th March 2007).

Fortunately it was a clear night, so I managed to get a few photos just as it was starting, followed by some film of it happening (although it had to be the lowest quality film I have, considering how long it takes), and finally a few photos of the moon eclipsed. All this was from about 8:30pm to 11:30pm. My camera isn't great at picking up the moon - mainly because I only have a 3x optical zoom, but the photos are ok.

I have access to a telescope, but I'm not sure how to take photos using it (it's a purely optical telescope - no computer wizardry here). If anyone knows of a reliable way, please tell!

More information on the eclipse can be found here:

    Those are some spectacular shots!

Thanks. It's a wierd occurrance where the flash version is almost better than the original! The footage of the moon moving as it gets eclipsed has been blurred in such a way that it looks better!!!

If I had had the patience (and enough wooly coats) I would have sat outside and done a stop motion film, because I can take photos at a better quality than the video (as you can see). Alas I am lazy and like the warm too much!

The shots at 1:20 are cool. Oh no! The moon turned blood red. The world is going to end!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
    Haha. Fortunately I have been out since this video, and the moon is a beautiful shimmering white again, so either;

    A) The world didn't end

    B) The world did end, but then got remade exactly how it was just before it ended

or C) We are all just figments of Jakob's imagination!

The world did end. I was there.

Oh, well in that case I guess nothing we do matters!

I wanted to see this so bad. Damn clouds.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
I was wondering if anyone else has captured it. Doing a search for 'eclipse' (included in either the title, caption or tags) shows only this video (uploaded within the last couple of days). Still, it only happened a few hours ago, so there's still a chance.

Too cloudy. Thunderstorms. All Today. No chance to see -- let alone film -- the eclipse.
  • jendreams 3 years ago
I saw it! But I didn't film it. I should have, but I was busy eating dinner and going to a dance performance and then eating some more. Sometimes food is just more important that really cool things. Sometimes...

The photos are really cool! Especially when you captured it with the red on the bottom and the pure white on the top. Very eerie, but in a good way.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Yeah, I'm quite pleased with those pictures. It makes the moon look a bit like Mars (with its polar ice cap on the top).

Damn. This is really spectacular. I should have stayed up. Actually, I was up, I should have looked outside the window! Ack!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Haha, I almost forgot about it too.

Blimey that was good. No-one told me there was a lunar eclipse going on.

I check the BBC News website most days, and they've been talking about it there. I've put a link in the caption showing their review of the eclipse.

  • I was watching the Lunar Eclipse last night too!
We got such a good view of all the stars accopanying the moon. It was fantastic! Was planning to make a video but the camera is crap so i didn't get much out of it...
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
My camera couldn't pick it up too well (in video), but I was quite surprised by the photos.

Your video is wonderful, nice shots, nice moves, nice!
I was at my window two, but I'm living in the city center and the lights made a great shot impossible.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks :)

I was quite lucky to be out in the countryside at the time, also it was a clear night, so it was perfect conditions for it.

Great ! I had the perfect point of view to take it but I didn't though that with my camera it could do something. We really see the red ! I should have tried !
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Haha, oh well. Fortunately lunar eclipses are more common than solar eclipses, so I'm sure there will be another chance soon.
  • Remyyy plus 3 years ago
Yeah ! February 21th next year. It will be during the night but we'll see then.

I forgot about it last night. You got good clips of it though, so I didn't totally miss out.

I also think you trailer logo at the end is great.

You did a great job photographing the eclipse. I had planned on doing the same thing but we had overcast skies on the East Coast of the US and I didn't even get to see it.

Cool, gj. I was out and noticed a group of people sitting and staring @ the moon and wondered wtf until I looked up and saw the blood red moon with no clouds..oh cool eclipse.!:0

While I was out in our remote little village, I noticed a few flashes going off here and there. I was little confused though - I'm not sure why they thought their flashes would illuminate the moon! Maybe there flashes are a LOT more powerful than mine!

love the buck films thing. very nice

Cheers Quinny. I found the trick for taking photos was to use a tripod, and set it for a long exposure (about 2-5 seconds - any longer and it gets blurry because the moon moves in that time!). I also set it on a timer because sometimes when I press the button, it jogs the camera, so if you have a long exposure it makes it blurry. Obviously with a timer you don't need to press the button, so they come out better.

Thats great stuff, Buck! Nice shots! Cool music to go along as well.
I managed to get outside last night with my camcorder for roughly 20 minutes. I just posted the finished product a few moments ago.

Thanks. I saw your video, you managed to get some really amazing video there. You picked it up a lot better than my poor little camera could manage. Good work!
