5000 frames a second, ridiculous! That's a Phantom, right? The spinning rig must be solid to support a such a camera!

  • mesmerizing... I would like to put the subtitles in Spanish but there are a few things in the video that escape my ear. Is anyone kind enough to read the text and fill the gaps so I can translate the whole thing?

  • hi! Thank you! I don't have internet at home now, and I let it go since noone was replaying. I'll see if I can finish the transcription some time. thanks!

    Beautiful stuff.

I'm intrigued as to why none of the spinning rig shots ended up in the final film, just the static, albeit amazing looking lock-offs. Was it an editorial decision or did it throw up technical issues that made it unsuitable?
  • Adoniram Sides 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure all of the shots in the film were "spinning" but the rig, while moving fast, still moves much slower than the framerate at playback. Check out the drops, they have a slight helix shape - I'd assume that's from the forces enacted on them from the rig.
  • olly courtney 1 year ago
If you look closely the spinning rig shots the drops weren't spun, just the camera. So there were no centrifugal forces acting on the liquid itself. Also if you fix your eyes on a point of moving liquid, there is no movement on that spinning axis, the only movement of the liquid is as it leaves the speaker heading upwards.
  • Dentsu London 1 year ago
Well spotted! We built the rig because we thought that moving around the sculpture in a horizontal circular motion as the liquid erupted would be interesting. We did a few takes but because the shape of the liquid is constantly changing, you didn't really get much of a sense of movement. We decided to abandon it early on so that we could move quicker and create more individual sculptures. Hey, if you don't try these things you never know!
  • olly courtney 1 year ago
Nice one. Thanks for setting the record straight. Always great to see the effort and ingenuity involved in getting something to work in camera rather than going straight for the CG option.
  • Ahhh, I was wondering this too. Any chance of seeing some of the footage when it was spun?

can someone share the technicalities of the stills shot? camera, exposure, how was it triggered?
  • Dentsu London 1 year ago
We used a Canon 5D Mark II for the stills, with a Canon EF 100mm Macro IS USM lens. Timing and flash was triggering by StopShot.
