Rainee graduates from Year 12 at the end of this year (2008) so we were stoked to do a shoot with her all done up and looking gorgeous in her formal dress.

Great video Matt!! Which Camera did you use for this one?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Thanks! This is actually one of our first full HD photo/video shoots using the Canon XH-A1 and the HV30+Brevis combo.

    very nice!
this is a great idea as well. do u sell this type of video as a package or something because this is a great idea?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey Brandon,

Thanks! Yeah, the video is offered as a package with the photoshoot. It's mainly about the photoshoot but I'm sure we'll have some takers for the video as well.

  • Matt might wana give your self the nickname "Lensflare" Matt :) Love the brevis shots.

This may be a personal preference but I found
a few shots, some around 2.14 has visible skin blotches probably from the cold, I recommend to maybe flatten or blow out the mid/shadow so the skin looks smoother, as girls tend to notice this stuff.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Ha! Thanks Peter! I love me some lens flare :)
  •
  • Matt O'Brien 1 year ago
The lens flare is really cool (note my future videos will have a little... hehe). Love the shot at 0:48 in black and white with the photographer, very cool transition from that to the still immediately after. The shots with the flowers are very nice and make me lust after the 35mm adapter. I do feel like the transition in focus should be slower on that shot though since the flowers move slowly in the wind. The shot where you spin around her takes the cake though, that is a real show stopper taking this piece from "pro" to something greater.

I also agree with the skin comment. Much in the way we pick our own work apart, the girl/her friends are going to do the same. This is where HD is almost a curse. Soft focus on the camera or in post may help here.

    Keep it up!

You see a difference in quality (sharpness) between the expensive canon and the hv20. I would love to see the brevis on the xha1.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Yeah, there is a slight difference but it's not enough to make me want to lug the XH-A1+Brevis around - it's so darn heavy. The HV30+Brevis is much more manageable :)

    Hey Matt!

Nice work! i think your videos are very inspiring! thank you for sharing!

How do you focus with the hv20+brevis? are you using an external monitor? or are you simply shooting upside-down on the tiny lcd screen?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey!

Thanks for the compliment! The Brevis I've got is the flip version so I see the image right side up. It takes a bit of getting used to but I only use the on-camera LCD for focusing. The magnify/focus assist feature on the HV30 comes in handy for staged stuff but most of the time I'm shooting 'run&gun' style so don't really have the time to use it.

    Cheers!

    Matthew.

    Wow, Matt, this is beautiful!
So is this something people in australia do on a regular basis or something? Cause even the senior shots as photographs is not something you'll find people in germany doing... Ouch, that was probably bad english, sorry ;-)
I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say though... People usually just don't have a photoshoot at the end of school. I think it's a nice idea though!
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey Anja,

Yeah, at the end of each year each school has what they call a 'Formal'. It's a big deal, especially for the girls. They go all out on a beautiful dress, earrings etc ... and the whole Year 12 class has a large function with a nice meal, dancing - it's basically a big party to celebrate finishing school.

Generally the only photos they get (apart from happy snaps) are fairly boring ones taken against a photo backdrop at the event itself, which is a shame because the girls go to so much effort and look so glamourous.

That's why we've started doing Formal photoshoots, to capture that stage of life and to provide some beautiful photos to go with it.

Ok, I get it... In germany we have these kinds of "after-school-party" too (but only after the last year), but nobody actually goes to have some nice pictures taken. At least as far as I know...

Thanks for the reply. I don''t want to carry heavy cams, but I guess I have to wait for the small cams with 3ccd. I know SD has them, but maybe next year. A hv40 maybe. The letus35 seems to be the most used among small camcorders, but the brevis had some good reviews too. I don't know which one to choose. ....we will see hwat happens. Loved the late shining sun scenes.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Yeah, the Letus Mini is very tempting for small cams like the HV30. I must resist :)

I dont have the words to compliment you with your style of shooting. The spin around and woah! Awsome!

Let's hope that I can accomplish the same kinda thing when I get my HVX200. Just Keep up the good work and you'll have yourself another big fan!

Hey man, maybe you responded to this question. But at the chorus "You're voice" you do this dolly type shot that is amazing. Can you kindly tell us how you accomplished this? :) very awesome...
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Hey Benjamin. I used the Steadicam Merlin for that shot. If I remember correctly I got pretty low to the ground and went as slow as I could - no slow motion done in post. To be honest, like most of my stuff, it was most likely a happy accident.

Fantastic... witch kind of NLE are you used for time-remapping ?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Thanks Alessio! I use the Pixel Motion time-remapping in After Effects. Haven't had a chance to try out Twixtor as yet.

  • Alessio Vinerbi 1 year ago
to do a best time remapping you have captured the original shot in 60i and deinterlace in post or 24p ?
  • Matt E plus 11 months ago
    Yeah, I de-interlace in post.
